My little 4.3 '04 GMC Sonoma is puking power steering fluid (not spraying) when the pump is running. I went camping for a few days, came back to town and there was a puddle under the gearbox. When the pump is not running there is a pretty steady drip off the nut connecting the arm to the gearbox. I can see a curtain of fluid forming above it. When I run the pump and turn the wheel, the fluid just starts oozing right out of that space above the connection from the arm to the box. By the time I have driven 10 miles the surrounding areas of the undercarriage are coated in fluid. The hoses could stand to be replaced, but it would appear the problem is definitely a seal.


I don't consider myself mechanically inclined, but I can do some work. I've changed plugs, oil, carbs; but I need guidance. Plus, I really don't have the money to throw at a mechanic to do something I could conceivably do myself.


My question(s): if the problem is a seal, how much of a pain in the ass is it to fix? Is it worth replacing the seal and if not what should I do? What are the risks of DIY? Will I absolutely need an alignment post fix? What am I looking at for cost; DIY and/or having a garage do the work?


I won't be driving the rig much in the next couple months but until then I kinda need it to get from A to B.

You stated: "I don't consider myself mechanically inclined", with that being said, I would find a "used" steering box and change out the old leaking box. There is too many critical things to look at and do for your skillset to do a proper job for a seal leak..

      This is my first post so sorry if I’m all over the place. I’ve had my 2014 Sierra slt for about two years now. I got it with 116k miles and I’m at about 174k right now. Since the day I’ve bought the truck it’s been nothing but issues. You name it, it’s happened. Four separate water leaks (sunroof, gps antenna, third brake light, and cab vents), 2 transfer case control modules, problems with the power steering going out, brakes going out at low speeds. A couple of months ago my transmission went out and it also needed various other repairs totaling over $20k. Now my park assist sensors don’t work, my rear doors don’t open from the inside and also don’t lock from the outside, reverse lights and camera don’t work, and it constantly dings at me to service my trailer brake system (seriously, it chimes at me about every two seconds as I’m going down the road, telling me to service the trailer brakes). I’ve gone through and checked every ground I can find and nothing helps. Today I went through every single fuse and relay in the truck. I found a couple of blown fuses and replaced as needed, but still no change. I’m at a loss for what to do at this point as I’m stuck with the truck after all the money I’ve sunk into it. Does anybody maybe have any solutions to any of these problems? I’m desperate for answers, anything helps.

      Hello Anyone. i have a LBZ Duramax, and i have just put in a new water pump and rebuild the oil cooler and the pipe that connects them i put in after and i pitched a gasket and it eakd then i took it out again and put two non OEM gaskets on there and it seemed to stop leaking when i added coolant but when i fired it all up it pissed out again so my question.. what is the propper way to put the pipe in, i could no imagin putting it in the cooler then putting it back on the truck, do you put it on the water pump first maybe then put it in??? or can you some how use gasket maker instead??? i need help

      I have 2014 Silverado and went to the gas station one morning and out of nowhere started smelling gas inside of the truck. Long story short, went to look underneath truck and had a 3x3 ft size puddle of fuel underneath truck on ground. Looked to see where it was coming from and looks like it’s coming from back side of motor. Can anyone help or recommend any action to take from this?

      I have 2014 Silverado crew cab and I’m noticing water leaking from under the dash. We had a pretty good rain today and I go to get in my truck and my floor mat had a good amount of water sitting on it and I could see water dripping from up under the dash. Good thing I have weather-tech mats. But I’m running into dead ends trying to figure out how it’s getting in. It’s not the sunroof, it’s not the fin (my headliner isn’t getting wet so it can’t be the fin?) I’ve checked my pillar while it was raining and no water running down it. I read something before about a guy who had a bad weld under the cowl could be letting it in? Or could it possibly be the edges of the windshield leaking? Just looking for any answer here. When I look up under the dash to see where it’s coming from I can see that there is a opening where the leather and firewall material were cut from the factory and it is wet when I put my hand up there, like the material used for the firewall is wet. But my question is, how is it getting there? I will upload pics tomorrow for reference to what I’m talking about. Thanks ahead of time.
