more detail in navi map

Does anyone know if you can increase the detail of the navi map for any given level of magnification? 

 

That is, I want to see more minor roads when zoomed out. Most of the roads I drive, unless I'm at a magnification of about 150ft, I can't see any roads, like I'm driving in the woods!

 

I have a 12 year old biking garmin with the ability to do this, seems odd I can't do it on a new one.
