Also thinking through some of those physics...  The brackets that mount them are welded onto the two tubes in the back.  I guess that theoretically extends the lever exerting force on the sheet metal.

I never did like that second tube underneath.  It made them very beefy looking, but also caused them to extend lower than I'd liked.

I would just remove the steps, stop drill the cracks.  Best solution would be to have someone plate it and then seam seal it.  Problem solved -- obviously you would have to trash the steps.

Drill a small hole in the end of the cracks. It will stop further damage.

The way to get more strength from sheet metal is use a large washer to increase contact surface which lowers local area stress. No offense, but frame mounting is better than sheet metal.

Yup. Will be tackling the repairs if it ever stops raining.

None taken. I didn't design it. Fwiw, Chevy doesn't mount them to the frame either. These were just a poor design in general.

Mine mount using the body to frame mount bolts, not that thin sheet metal edge.

So you could take those off, and get some that mount to the body bolts, like mine....and be back in business.

Well your not the only one who’s had this problem.

This was my post. If youlook at the pictures closely you can see after market brackets don't go to the top where there is multiple layers of metal on a seem. This is factory bracket

How did you ultimately fix it? Have it welded?

So far I haven't had it fix. I talked to a body shop and what they would do is liquid weld (glue)a reinforcement plate over it.i don't want it welded cause I know it will rust from the back side. With the GM factory board it doesn't stress the crack at all with full weight on it so I kinda forget about it but I need to get it taken care of

Yeah, the backside rusting is my concern with welding as well.    I'd be worried about using an adhesive since I can't get to the backside to clamp it.

I don't think we have to many other options tho

Agreed.  I'll do some digging and see what I can come up with.  Maybe it'd be enough to get a bolt and washer just big enough back there for clamping.
