How can I tell what type of motor is in my truck?

Hey everyone, I just bought a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. Its had an engine swap, I don't know what type of engine has been swapped into it. I know generally that you can tell by the label on the plastic cover but there isn't a number 5000, 5300, 5700, ect. Is there any way I can figure this out without having to pay to get the VIN checked?

Presumably it's another LS engine.  The size in liters (like 5.3) is stamped into the front of the block on the driver's side.  The type of heads might give it away too.

A quick simple way is to simply read the sticker on the radiator support. Sometimes on the bottom of the hood at the front!

If you have a code reader, it might help.  Since it goes to the ECM.  Like Blue Driver that I have and use with my phone, it will tell you the engine info.
