Newbie in need of help

Recommended Posts

Dear Board,

I'm a new guy here.  I've always had a truck.  I've owned a Datsun, an Isuzu, several full sized Fords, a Cummins, and a K1500, a Suburban or two, and now I own a 2004 Avalanche Z71.

It's a nice truck but it doesn't really fit my needs.  I need a truck for weekend recreational use and occasional trips.  I want a truck because I just want to load my stuff in the back under a cap and do my stuff.

I found a nice 1996 GMC K2500 LWB extended cab locally.  It's a one owner truck with a little over 90,000 on the meter but it has a 350 and 5 speed stick.  I love a stick since every automatic transmission vehicle I ever owned lost their cookies, except for the Avalanche.

I was hoping someone could give me some information about the 5 speed in the truck I am looking at?  I've tried the VIN decoders and they work sort of.  But not like the old days when you could punch in in VIN and get a build sheet.

I have no idea what transmission is in this truck?  I have no idea about most of the specs of the truck.  If I gave you a VIN could you tell me what I am looking at?  With or without your help I think I'm going to buy it, slap an aluminum cap on it, and go fishing but I would welcome any information anyone can provide.

The VIN is 1GTGK29R1TE524299

Regards,

Tim Murphy

Best bet is to find the RPO sticker in the glove box.  It most likely has a NV4500 which is a very stout trans.  Probably has 3.73 rear end.  Maybe a 4.10.  In a one ton truck I would expect a 4 bolt main 350 so you lucked out there.  If you get the RPO sticker I would be able to help you out more.
