General Motors has moved further along in the testing regimen for the all new 2020 Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon full-size sport utility vehicles. The SUV pair were recently spotted on public roads, still camouflaged, but showing off significant details and clues about the new vehicles.

Our spy photographer reports:

We just got our best and most complete look yet at a wide range of the 2020 GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe caught testing on public roads.  The huge fleet caught many trim levels of the Silverado-based SUVs, including our first look at the Tahoe RST and the GMC’s Yukon variant.

Independent Rear Suspension Shot Close-Up
Our public road encounter with the 2020 Tahoe gives us an intimate look a the new independent rear suspension that has been added, in response to the rejuvenated Ford Expedition.  We can see details of the new IRS setup in greater clarity than ever before

GMC Yukon Makes An Appearance
Among the fleet of prototypes, we got our first-ever look at the GMC Yukon.  The Yukon displays a different LED signature up front—currently a horizontal string of lights at the top corners of the front-fascia—and a traditional GMC grille without the Tahoe’s crossbar design element.  Prominent, vertical fog lights can be seen on the lower corners, reminiscent of those found on the GMC Sierra 1500 pickups.

Chevy Tahoe Shows New Design Details
Our close-up shots of the 2020 Chevy Tahoe prototypes give ups some new design details.  We see a prominent crossbar bisecting the Tahoe’s large grille, sharing some of the look with the Silverado pickup.  We can see elements of an LED signature that runs vertically on the lower portion of the lighting assembly.  It appears to stop at the level of the crossbar, so it’s likely that the LED signature will follow the crossbar horizontally, creating a version of the “boomerang” LED signature found on the Silverado.  Along with the independent rear suspension, we see sporty dual-exhaust tips set wide at each corner of the rear-fascia.

Tahoe RST Trim Level Likely Spotted
The test fleet contained a plethora of Tahoe/Yukon trim levels, including, it appears, the sporty Tahoe RST package.  The black wheels get a touch of brightwork, and look like a new take on the wheels offered on the current Tahoe RST.  The current RST package unlocks a number of performance-minded modifications, and we expect the next-gen RST to do the same.  Curiously, this prototype eschews the double dual-exhaust set-up, for what appears to be a single exhaust on the right side of the rear bumper.

Hot damn.  I see Traverse + T1 Silverado, maybe a dash of Blazer.  That exhaust setup is titties too.

Wheels on that second mule are drool worthy.

Definitely Independent Rear Suspension.

And T1 Mirrors on the doors.

I bet these will top 75-80K !

I think moving to IRS is a great decision for these large SUVs.  It should allow them more space to lower the cargo floor or fold seats.  It just did not seem like the solid axle was offering most buyers a meaningful benefit anymore.

I don't typically pay much attention to the new SUVs, since they are way out of my price range.  But, should I expect to see the new suspension on a Cadillac before a GMC / Chevy?

Could it be possible that IRS finds its way into the next Gen Silverado/Sierra to compete with RAMs ride quality?

Perhaps 2023-2024
