2019 Chevy Silverado Fuel Economy Surprise - Headed Down, Not Up

The EPA posted the new fuel economy numbers for a variety of Silverado combinations this week. The new 2.7-liter engine is one highlight. What struck us after reviewing the info is that the numbers are not that impressive. Chevrolet made a lot of noise about the new truck's aerodynamics and engine technology, leading us to get the impression that some interesting numbers would follow.  Now that we see the numbers we are not so sure. First off, there are 38 different Silverado 1500 combinations listed by www.FuelEconomy.gov. Four pages of different fuel economy numbers for the model years 2018 and 2019. You can find them all yourself on the site to view which interest you, but we are pulling out a few for discussion purposes.

First Up 5.3L V8 4x 4  2018 vs. 2019

To our eyes, the 2019s (denoted by "K") look like they get lower fuel economy. Are we mistaken?

The reason there are two Silverados is one is the work truck, the other not the work truck. They get different MPG ratings. The Ram is the new mild hybrid eTorque V6. Hmm.   

 

Our friends at Automotive News asked Chevy's Monte Duran why the new trucks have lower fuel economy numbers than the old and he replied, "We increased towing capacity, payload, and it's a much larger bed and a much larger cab."

Kind of an embarrassing setback. :(

GM advertised the new body styling and cheek air curtains would aid in better economy.

The Dynamic Skip Fire cylinder technology was suppose to also increase economy.

Not to mention the 400 or so lbs of weight reduction.

Aren't they also standard with the Start/Stop/Start technology too?

Worse fuel economy, and a smaller fuel tank.  *shakes head*

 

But, the bed is 7" wider, and  rear crew cab passengers get a mile of space between their knees and the front seats, as well as HVAC vents...

 

I think maybe the midsize truck market will see a magnificent resurgence.

Yes but you have start stop technology and aero curtains. Oh wait there is more.....even tailgate is designed with aero flow top priority . How could this be ??

Frontal area increased. This is the biggest factor I suspect.

Gear ratios changed. It's hard to imagine this would have had a negative effect on economy though.

yeah, but that wouldn't affect highway mileage. I don't even know if the epa test for city driving would make the engine stop at all.

Just seems crazy you would spend a fortune on new D.O.D. system, aero package assist and weight reduction and end up with the same or tiny bit worse than what you had. Bear in mind you never increased hp on engines neither.

I must have read the report wrong, thought it was city and highway, either way doesn’t bode well for GM.

Their test does include highway and city. The problem is the auto start stop only saves fuel when sitting still at a stoplight or in a traffic jam. I don't know if their "city" test includes much of that, or if it just involved stop signs. So even though that feature is designed to save fuel, and increase your fuel economy per tank, it doesn't affect MPGS while the vehicle is moving.

To me this is the main cause.  You can reduce weight but increasing the frontal area and now you are pushing more air than before makes a huge diffence. So how much weight would it really take to loose to overcome the resistance to pushing that air?  To me they didn't seem to streamline it much.  They say the extra spoiler on the back of the cab and the tailgate help.  It seems to me they needed to do more.  JMO.

Are you guys really going to post pics comparing the Trailboss models to regular models?

 

Seems a bit misleading.

 

Also read that there were changes to EPA testing procedures.  Don't forget that the 2018 models with the 6 speed had 3.08 gears standard, I believe these 6 speed 5.3s are 3.42 standard. Lots of factors at play.

Those appear to be screenshots from the federal site. I think the site only has one image for the 2019 Silverado. Looks like the 2018 only had one image as well.

      Need some opinions on what the heck is going on with my 2007 silverado classic. It has a 4.8 litre vortec with an afe cold air intake, edge cts2 programmer, gibson shorty headers, and a 3 inch catback exhuast. I have the code p0430 coming up but cant figure out what it is. Ive done a back pressure test on the cats, and did knock sensors and all O2 sensors a year ago. It doesnt feel like it has a misfire and im very mechanically inclined and everything in this truck is looked after. When i bought it there was a 4wd code and it wouldnt engage so i swapped out the button cluster in the cab and now it works fine. Other than that the truck has been perfect but id like to figure out what the heck is setting off the code. I have no exhuast leaks and the cats checked out perfect, anyone know what else it could be? Im looking for anything at this point, i hate check engine lights and have cleared it with the programmer but it comes back very shortly after being cleared. Thanks

      About to install a 2" motofab under strut leveling kit on monday, but am very concerned with torque specs. I can't find the exact torque specs for everything I need, and I don't even know how important it is for everything to be torqued exactly to specs. It's a 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ, 4x4. 
       
      How important is it to be precise when torqueing? Does anyone know where to find all the exact torque specs for my make and model? Has anyone ever done one before, and can you provide insight?

      I recently bought this clean title, high mileage 2000 Silverado LS Z71 from my coworker. It was right before Christmas and I really wanted to help the guy out knowing full well I could do something with it. Heck, I needed a truck after all. I get home and attempt to drain the oil but nothing comes out. After some poking around with a screwdriver, I get it to drain. Chunks are flowing along with the oil and it turns out there was so much sludge build up in the bottom of the pan, it sucked some up, suffered a momentary loss of oil pressure and spun the bearing. I know the transmission had a hard shift from first to second. Could it be low fluid? Maybe, but why do the swap just to find out the transmission is bad?
      My coworker friend was a smoker and it appears he preferred his coffee without a lid so the interior is....interesting. Also truck only has oxidation on the hood and fenders so the only reasonable choice was to find a salvaged donor vehicle to source parts from!!
      I have a buddy with a dealers license and I'm debating picking up this rear ended 2006 Escalade for a FULL front end/interior/dash/drivetrain swap. Can it be done? Plug and play? Anything someone doing something like this should know?
      I've done some pretty crazy engine swaps and garage rebuilds, 2 stroke porting early on, etc. 

      I have the ability but hopefully you folks can chime in and confirm whether or not it is possible or if there is a better option. I was also looking at a 2004 Duramax/6speed which was t-boned pretty good as a potential candidate but there's something about that plush Escalade interior....

      The end of December, I noticed a small amount of oil on the garage floor under the front of rear differential of my 2WD, 2019 High Country.   It appeared to be a pinion seal leak.  The Dealership concurred and ordered a new front yoke and pinion seal.  Today, the Dealership called and informed me that GM did not have the parts so they sent a Complete new rear Differential as a replacement!!  Now they need my truck for a Full day to swap rear ends.   Appears to be an EXPENSIVE way to replace a $10 part, but GM must know Best!?

      GM laid out a comprehensive advertising plan this past week to support the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra now that they are ready for volume delivery. One of the innovative ways that GM had promised to promote the trucks was via Amazon packaging adverts. As you know from our coverage here, GM is wisely partnering with Amazon whenever possible. 

      The images here are from Facebook 2019+ Silverado/Sierra Owner's club member Daniel Glauser. Daniel ordered up some products from Amazon and was nice enough to share the first images we have seen of the new GM promotional partnership with Amazon. Every little bit helps. What's your take on GM using this promotional opportunity?
