3:23 towing and rating ?

Recommended Posts

So reading the trailer and towing guide on GM site.  I'm looking for the 6.2 with the 3:42 finding there are way more 3:23 (where I'm looking at least).  So I thought max tow on 1500 got you to the ~ 9,300 lbs.

According to this.  Max tow gets you the 9.76" ring gear with 3:43 and the way it reads seems like that is 12,500 lbs.

I probably would only look to pull ~ 7-8k a few times a year, is the 9300 lbs available on on 3:23 standard SLT ( I thought this was around 7200lbs)

Sorry if that is worded confusingly, but if I'm covered to 9300 on the 3:23 that may help in the search.

Edit just finally saw the detail diagram looks like it is 9100 on the 4wd shortbox

Contact GM with your VIN, they can give you the payload and tow ratings for your truck.

Thanks for the reply, I'm on the search for a purchase.

Ah, missed that.  If you find a truck you like, you can still contact GM with the VIN so there arent any surprises after you fork over the cash.  Can also ask for the RPO list so you know everything that's on the truck.

It depends on the configuration of the truck, regular cab, double cab, crew cab, 2wd, 4wd. Google 2018 GMC Sierra Owners manual, all the tow ratings are listed in the owners manual. Crewcab 4WD with short box and 6.2 engine is rated at 9,100 lbs same as the same truck with the 5.3 engine and 3.42 gears.

You'll have to ask GM lol. And 5.3 8-speed with enhanced towing package is 11,000 lbs.

I was just going to say that I will call GM engineer buddy and get a answer to why. It is got to be marketing and software of the trans/engine combo. Like load vs the torque management in gear vs warranty.

Look what 3/4 and 1 tons had HP and TQ wise back in the 90s a whole lot less than most 1500s now.  I guess it has a lot to do with weight and stopping power more than what they can actually pull.
Makes me wonder about wheels also. I know the tires say 2600lb rated but hard to believe thinner profiles and heavier wheels help. I have 24" but am looking at the same style in 22" and a 40 or 45 side wall and 305 wide. Wilwood huge brake kit and my rear air bag. I would put money my truck can pull better than a stock 6.2l 2wd 6 speed.

All in the Owner's manual:
https://my.gmc.com/content/dam/gmownercenter/gmna/dynamic/manuals/2018/GMC/Sierra/2018-gmc-sierra-owners-manual.pdf

As for the ring gear, that only applies to 5.3L trucks on the max tow.  6.2L get it regardless.  GM just screws us with 3.23 gears on the 6.2L unless you get Max tow, which I found impossible to find on the lots when I was buying.

Or just look in the Owner's manual I linked above and get the rating for every combo available.
