So I bought an extended warranty today.

Bought mine through the dealer.  3100 for 6 year 125K.  Finance guy was great.  I questioned their margins and told him I would pay the amount where they make 500 off the deal.  He complied and said that is their standard deal.  Employees get 400 off of that and they make 100 bucks on them.

After my negotiated purchase price was finalized, I played them by going to finance, told the finance director that I’d walk out of the deal if I didn’t get the extended 100K warranty on full drivetrain. GMC agreed to do it only if I financed through them. I paid it off immediately through my bank and now have a free Full 100K powertrain warranty. And no, it’s not added to the price, done after negotiated drive out

I got the extended warranty from my local Chevy dealer. Zero deductible if the work is done there (they're actually a very good dealership) but if I do have a needed repair away from home, I think it's over 50 miles, all I pay is $100. The total for the warranty was $2800. With the issues including the AC condenser, vaccum pump and whatever else can come up I figured overall it'd be worth it knowing the truck's covered.

 

As stated in my original post, 10K miles a year will be the most I put on it. Between the '16, the '04, the '75 and my two cruisers it should work out pretty well.

They used to be kind of a waste of money with the C/K trucks, with today's trucks all the control modules, computers, sensors, hundreds of miles more pin sized wires etc. it probably isn't a bad idea if you plan to keep your truck after warranty. I know they outsource all these modules to third party countries ranging from Germany to China so I have little faith in these trucks lasting 10+ years like the 90's and early 2000's trucks did without major systems failing. With boxed frames and paper thin body steel they will rot in winter climates before 10 years. It all comes down to how long you want to keep the vehicle. I trade mine in every 5 years to recycle my down payment + some, but with the way MSRP's keep skyrocketing, I wont be able to afford to do that anymore or I will have to downgrade in trims and it would be hard to give away my 6.2L SLT for a 5.3L WT as a personal vehicle, even though the WT's are still pretty nice.

Heater hose runs about .49 a foot at Vato Zone. You have 1400 feet of heater hoses in your truck?

 

The aftermarket condenser without the weak hoses the GM unit has only runs about $63. Not sure how you could say you saved $1100 on a condenser repair. You're still about $1500 in the hole before your break even.

This sounds like the same warranty I bought.  72 months/100,000 miles.  $2840.  I don't usually buy extended warranties, but on a vehicle this expensive and this expensive to repair, I figured I'd take my chances.  I don't want to deal with repairs but I want to keep the truck awhile.  I had been doing 2 year leases when I was working and driving a lot for the company.  With the warranty, I'll get a new truck just before it runs out.  At that time I figure I'll get some money back because selling it with the warranty, even for a short time left, will give the buyer some piece of mind.  I don't like selling vehicles, but I know I'll do a lot better selling with a truck than if I were to trade it in on the new one.

I got a "free" "lifetime powertrain" warranty when I bought my car last year. It is provided by National Automotive Experts. I have no personal experience yet, as i have not made any claims. However, one hassle is since I don't live near the selling dealer, I have to get all my required maintenance per-approved before getting it done. Even if I get it done at a local dealer. Its not really much trouble (5min phone call), but I am not suppose to change my own oil, or do any of the required maintenance myself. At least not without re-doing what I pay the shop to do, or doing it more often that required.

Agreed. An extended warranty is nothing but an insurance policy. For a few it pays off but for most, they're throwing their money away. Service agreements (extended warranties) are a HUGE money maker for the dealership and the carrier. Personally I never, ever buy service contracts. Take the $35/month and put it in the bank and you'll be way ahead.

If I had a GM truck w/o the 100k powertrain warranty & didn’t want to “mod” it- particularly deleting the AFM & adding aftermarket cam, or adding aftermarket torque converter - then I would absolutely get one. I’ve had 4 vehicles w/ V8s & AFM that went over 45k mikes 2 of the 4 had lifter/AFM induced issues (2015 Sierra & 2008 G8 GT) i dropped lifters 2x on my 6.2 Sierra & it seemed like was happening again when I totaled it w/ 62k miles.

 

my buddy is on his 4th K2 (keeps complaining when GM updates truck whether it be lights or infotainment & “upgrades”- he’s now on a ‘17 Denali ultimate) 2 of the 4 he owned had torque converter replacement. The jury’s out whether it’s simply incorrect/overfilled fluid, poor software programming, bad torque converter, interference of AFM or a combo of all this that causes the erratic & sometimes unbearable tranny behavior. 

 

I also had my headunit/Nav infotainment go haywire around 40k- would act as if a “ghost” was just tapping the screen random buttons would act as if pressed the GPS would jump around, menus would just pop up etc, became virtually useless in many ways & I was also searching for replacements for that as well. 

 

These are are things I was “OK” w/ failing b/c I did intend on keeping the truck long term & don’t mind some modding along the way b/c it was paid off- I relegated myself that fact & figured camming/stalling it + throwing in slick aftermarket head unit would liven up the truck some & make the next few years of ownership more enjoyable.

 

many people don’t think that way or have the ability to have an expeinsve truck w/o a payment & don’t need the hassle/financial pain of having to deal w/ a truck loan payment AND a new can after a lifted dropped & wiped out the stocker.

 

gotta decide what kinda owner you are & how long you plan on keeping it- I do agree it’s best to buy from the dealer.

For that dealer listed above, I've purchased multiple warranties from Denny....

 

Here's the most recent quote I got from him for my 2018 Silverado CC 4x4 LTZ back in June.  Good luck on beating his prices!  (Price on far right is what you pay, he usually has a promo going)

 

Miles and months are added from start date.  Must be within 36k miles and no more than two years older than current model year for these prices.  In other words....it doesn't cost anything more to purchase brand-new versus 2.5 years old and 30k miles.....but you gain extra miles by buying later since we it is additive, at least that's my opinion.

When I bought my new truck the finance guy tried wheeling and dealing and pushing and pushing for an extended warranty, to the point that he was basically begging and came across as desperate. It was almost comical if it wasn't so annoying. But it told me everything I needed to know; he needed it more than I did.

I just bought an extended warranty through my GM dealer yesterday for my new 2019 Sierra Denali before I read about Denny plan. All 2018-2019 GMC vehicles come with a fully transferable, no deductible, 5-year/60,000 mile, Powertrain Limited Warranty. And my truck has the GM bumper to bumper 36/36k standard warranty. But I purchased an 8 year/100k fully transferable (or prorated refund) extended warranty with $100 “disappearing” deductible, meaning 0 deductibles at my local dealer where I purchased my truck and $100 deductible at any other repair facility, includes towing, rental car and road hazard, etc. It was their top warranty that I got for $1800 and works out to under $19 per month, but I just realized that it is really for only 60 months since the first 36 months are covered, so it actually works out to $30 per month. They made this offer because I agreed to finance entire purchase price at 7% which I will pay 90% in first payment, then 5% the next month and 5% on third payment leaving only the interest to be paid off day after 3rd payment clears. The finance deal gave me a $1000 rebate but must borrow at least $10k and keep loan open for minimum of 90 days. Dealer paid me way more than the interest on the loan will be by lowering my already negotiated best purchase price by a few hundred dollars. Also got free oil and filter changes, lube jobs and tire rotations with balancing for life. Dealer obviously got a nice kick-back by getting me to do a loan through them. I still got a great deal and I am very happy but I apparently could have saved some money by waiting a couple of years and buying the “Denny” plan, maybe? However I think my local dealer will give me better service for being such a loyal customer and not shopping them on the warranty to save a couple of hundred bucks, just not worth it in my opinion.
