What to look out for when buying a 14-16 Silverado 1500 CC?

I want to buy a 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country or LTZ CC in white diamond tricoat or iridescent pearl. I'm an incel living with my parents LMAO jk, so I'm saving up cash. I want to pay cash for the truck if I can find one for under $28,000. Before I burn $28,000 of my hard earned money, what are the major, salary-garnishing problems do I need to look out for when buying these trucks? I hear alot of bashing on these trucks on youtube from everyday owners to much-respected youtube mechanic, Scotty Kilmer. Very sure y'all know who he is. I much rather hear from you guys who own these trucks for quite some time and shine some light on what to look out for before I burn all my hard-earned money on a moderately-modded, luxury-like gas-hogging weekend/dating cruiser. Prefer getting it with a 5.3 L83 engine and in RWD.

I have a 2015 SLE with the 4.3, 4X4 and leather  It has been and is an outstanding truck.  If you found a used truck in the same condition, then you wouldn't be disappointed.  However, if I had $28K cash budget for a truck, I'd speak to my local GM dealer about their remaining '18's!  You may find a well optioned LT or SLE that meets or exceeds your wants. The more open you are to colour and trim levels, the better your selection!

You need to save more money. I’m not sure where you’re at but where I am most 14-16 High Country/LTZ CC 4x2’s under $32k have quite a lot of miles on them. Under $28k you’re looking at a much more “used” truck. 

Curious about “all the bashing” you’ve heard on these trucks?  And who the hell is Scotty Kilmer?

All the bashing is a mute point to me.

Someone will always complain about everything made.

Every manufacturer makes some bad ones.

The trick is to buy one that isn't a bad one.

As far as prices you have to look around in your area regularly at the different models and mileage on them to see what they are going for.

The way I look at if your paying payments buy leftovers, good deals and CPOs. Your paying cash do the research, car fax etc. then buy it. The payments between new and a newer used isn't that much.

I won't comment on your financial planning, you are free to do whatever makes you happy. These are very nice reliable trucks. Don't get turned off by the few bashers online. Every make and model will have a couple lemons. 

 

No matter what truck you look at, be sure to drive it up to Freeway speed to make sure it doesn't shake, wobble, or vibrate. If it passes that test and a mechanic has gone over everything else, you should be fine.

 

With your budget, the mileage you are likely looking at (50,000+), all the routine maintenance will need to be done, whether the dealer does it for you before purchase, or you take it home and do it yourself. But that's the same for any vehicle, so should not be a surprise to your wallet.

You would probably better off to keep a majority your cash and pick up an 18 at 0% financing, even if you have to settle for an LT you an add leather seat covers down the road. You can invest that $28k for a 5-8% return, especially if you have a steady income and can afford the payments. If you put 20k down on an LT, you would be between $300-400 per month for a new warrantied truck. Higher resale, warranty, peace of mind. You are buying an asset, yes you are saving on initial cost by going used, but you will lose in terms of paying for repairs and when you go to trade the truck in. With all the computers and modules in today's vehicles, I am skeptical of buying used. The only way a used vehicle is worth its price is when it is beyond 5 years old in my experience, if the price is too good to be true on a current vehicle, the vehicle is probably a lemon. In 2016 I bought a 2014 WT1500 for 20k CAD (14k USD), it is a junk pile to say the least, many computer issues. You get what you pay for. I was looking at a used 2009 6.2L in 2010 for $35k, I ended up in a brand new SLT All Terrain 5.3L for the exact same price after incentives and car recycle program. Not telling you what to do, just some info to chew on.

You could put that 28 G down on a new leftover 2018 and have a small payment on the remainder. I mean like $150 - $200 a month for a couple years  I wouldn't spend that much on a 3- 4 year old truck. High country or whatever. It's your money though . If you don't want a payment then you end up with a used truck with little to no warranty. Warranty is huge on these trucks because they cost big buck to fix just about anything that could go wrong . 

That's my two cents.

3 weeks ago I bought a used 2016 LT with just over 13k miles. I paid $30K for it. I have been driving Dodges for the last 23 years. I always loved how people who had never owned a Dodge talked about how bad they were. I always thought they were a very good truck. I still do. Even though my last one was rusting to the ground. I Attribute a lot of that to washing it once a year, whether it needed it or not. Since I live in one of the "Salt Capital" states is the rust belt. I'm gonna take better care of this LT.

 

You don't buy used vehicles by color. I wouldn't have bought this LT if it had been new. Not that fond of silver. But I was very fond of the low miles on it! Don't know now where I was going with this. If you've got that much scratch to put down on a truck. I'd go with a new one, and get the color and options I want.

I would strongly recommend 4x4. Even if you hardly use it. That one time you need it is worth it. 4x4’s almost always go for more money during resale.

I appreciate the timely feedback, but I'm still not getting my question answered directly. At the moment I don't have the cash set aside for it, but looking to have set aside by late 2020. Most know what I am looking for. I do see some High Country trucks that are 2014-15 that are priced at below 29K with under 75K miles on it at new BMW and VW luxury car dealers assuming they are trade ins. 

 

I am a DIYer, so year isn't that important to me in a K2 truck. I have automotive training years ago and do work on my car unless if it involves the heavy use of $10 grand valued tools such as alignment machines and OBD scanners.

 

What I really want to know is, what are the major problems that some of you guys experience with these trucks, regardless of trim, that costs over $600 in a single repair ticket?

 

This is just a "weekend toy" vehicle that I don't plan make as a daily driver. Probably a good 6-8,000 miles a year. I do have a beater truck a 2007 Silverado classic WT extended cab that is still going strong and that will be used for hauling.

Everybody here gotta know Scotty Kilmer..He is youtube's best video mechanic who has been in the car repair business for 50 years. Just google him. Yes I hear a lot of bashing on these trucks like their engine knocking, transmission shifting oddly etc..I think most of it has to do with the way they operate their vehicle.

I don’t know that there’s anything specific to look for... there are no major issues that stand out. Yes people have problems... lifters, oil pumps, transmissions, the Chevy shake, you name it. Biggest semi-common issue is the shake and maybe odd shifting transmission. These don’t generally spell catastrophic failure, more of a nuisance. Best thing is to go by the book, as with any used car. Check the oil and trans fluid... get a carfax... look at whatever maintenance records are available. The body and bed of the truck will tell you how it was used. I frankly like to buy old guys trucks... they’re usually garaged, dealer serviced, rarely driven in bad weather, and have hardly done any real hard work. Other than all this, it’s all about gut feel and luck of the draw. I’d be looking hard at private party sales if it were me.

Do check the service history of whatever you’re looking at by VIN at the dealer. It willlet you know (usually) everything that happened while it was under warranty.
