I've been hearing a lot of horror stories about GM power steering doing some wacky things, is this something I need to look into or have I just been online too long? Hearing about power steering loss and sometimes electronic steering that randomly jerks while driving is quite frankly pretty scary especially when you're driving inches beside a semi truck on the highway. Is this something I need to worry about in my 2018 Silverado or is it just the one in a million trucks with this issue. Would appreciate some input on this.

Thanks,

Victor

You can look into your recalls with your GM app but supposedly it’s been taken care of a couple years ago. Are you having an issues at all?

I had a stabilitrak warning a few days ago which lead me to search on that issue. Who knew the stabilitrak issue is commonly linked with the steering too. Nothing is really problematic but just reading these stories is kind of scary. I wouldn't want my steering to be jerking around when I'm cruising 120.

Our trucks are all electronically controlled, just a simple loose crimp on the wire leading to the battery can send everything off. It’s usually and easily diagnosed. Schedule a time to drop it off and they should easily find the code leading to your issue and fix it. Don’t worry. Oh, almost forgot, are you using a tuner?

Stabilitrak, sevice ESC,  reduced steering assist are all tied together, had all these and others on my Trail Boss. Had the master cylinder replaced and have not had any issues since.

There was a thread a couple months back about a ground up by the drivers side dash speaker that was bolted together with some of the sound dampening material in it, causing a poor ground. I believe one of its symptoms was some funky stabilitrak error and something with dash lights.

My 015 was one of the ones that fell under the recall. Stealership reprogrammed it while in for oil change. I never had the problem before and haven’t had it since. I’m more worried about the slow speed brake failure than I ever was/have been about the steering.

I don't mind electrical problems here and there, I just need to be reassured that my truck won't be randomly jerking to the right when I'm cruising down the freeway haha. I don't really like the idea of electric when it comes to steering, my old truck with hydraulic was much better and gave me piece of mind.

You've been online too much...Not gonna happen...the recalls pertaining to power steering are for loss of steering assist. You would still be able to control the vehicle, there would be no power assist. People who say they're truck has randomly jerked them into a semi on the highway need to put down the sauce...

You've all probably seen this but the footage at the end of this video is a little sketchy if you ask me. Hopefully that twiching doesn't happen when the car is in motion or else that's a pretty big issue. The wheel turned about halfway in the other direction haha

I write service for a Chevy/Cadillac dealer and have never seen this repair on any truck. Even IF this were an issue in 2014, your 2018 will have any updated modifications done waaay before you got it.

Got it, thanks for the reassurance. Steering is not something one needs to worry about when driving. Wishing we could go back to the good ol days aka pre-2007

Holy smoke.  Already had to have a master cylinder replaced, on a brand-new Trailboss?  Does GM have ANY quality control anymore??

Victor,

It is something to be concerned about, and is in fact a Recall.

Thanks, I'm still suprised I have this issue on my 2018. The recalls were for 2014-15 models. At least my steering isn't acting up...just the Stabilitrak warning for now.
