I hope I’m not stirring a hornets nest here... I know there are a ton of Amsoil fans here, personally I use Mobil 1 for oil changes... haven’t made the time to change my transfer case and differentials on my 16 4wd... called a shop and quoted me $250 for all 3...and they use BG products...

1) is that a reasonable deal

2) is BG any good?  (I’ve done some research, but can’t teally tell if they are sponsored or independent results...

thanks in in advance!

I’ve never used the products. I understand there’s warranty involved in using their products, so it’s worth a look.

Back when I was a tech (European company) we had a bunch of BG stuff. Mainly for flushes. I felt like it was all snake oil.

They had a transmission flush that was complete BS. It would flush the system backwards so it would “pull” everything out of the filter and you’d leave that filter in it and alone. 1 positive is it would flush all the fluids out. But personally I’d say just drop the pan, get what fluid you can and throw in a new filter on a regular basis and you’d be better off.

Been using BG products strictly since mid 2000's and GM's foray into DI's.....absolutely excellent products!

Amsoil Signature Series all the way! I was a solid Mobil1 annual protection guy until I found out that “Full Synthetic IS NOT 100% Synthetic, it’s a misleading BS marketing ploy to get you to buy their products. Amsoil is 100% Synthetic and that’s why it’s been rated to X4 surpass the highest protection “Annual Protection” Mobil1. Mobil1 oil filters may filter out 99% of the dirt in oils but only 30 Microns where as Napa Platinum oil filters filter out 20 Microns.

So much lying with misleading marketing and this is why I recommend everyone to take the time to look into just how much bang they’re getting out of their dollar.

I’ve recently replaced front and rear Diff fluids and transfer case with Amsoil Signature Series, Yesterday, I was set 85 mph on a road trip, 86 degrees outside and transmission temperature read 175 which is at least 10 degrees lower than before I did the fluid change. You get what you pay for.

I run a can of their 44K in a tank of fuel before each oil change and add their MOA in each oil change. I’m at 60,000 and everything seems great, so far. I also did their Injection Service at. 40,000 and the dealer basically gave me the trans flush at 50,000. Supposedly since I have these services in my record, I’m good for a $2,000 stipend should my engine or trans crater. IDK, I didn’t use the BG products for that aspect. They do keep my truck seeming (to me) to perform well. Who knows. If I were choosing between BG and food, I wouldn’t have done it. But, fortunately I’m not.

One thing that I’ve found at my dealership, if you’re decent, polite and spend a dollar once in a while, they really want to keep you happy and coming back. The specials, coupons, discounts and an occasional freebie offset the cost of going to the “Stealership” and make it as cheap as going anywhere for service.

Now, that said, I still do my own brake jobs and things like that. But oil changes and preventative maintenance, they’ve kept me happy. At least at “my” dealership, it seems that way. Ymmv.

The question is about BG products.. What is your experience with the product?

So one thing that has surfaced in this thread is people have brought up BG additives...and I am not looking for additives per say, simply changing the differential fluids and the transfer case... (whether or not their fluids have 'special' additives that do or do not make a difference, I'm not sure how much I am concerned...my main concern is do they have quality products and if so, is $250 a reasonable value for those three services?

having said this, there has been some really good feedback on this thread, so thank you!

I have used BG 44 K but stopped due to price. It's a good product.

I think $250 for 3 services is a lot considering what I can do it for with off the shelf fluids.

I think I can do my 3 drive line services with off the shelf fluids for $50 in fluid cost.

75W-90 Full Synthetic Gear Oil, 1 Quart

This for differentials.

b7ca1e0a-1a3a-46d8-9e46-b48623954edd_1.5a416c697ff0802a57b3ee5ef6cc3e0b.jpeg?odnWidth=undefined&odnHeight=undefined&odnBg=ffffff

Transmission fluid I use.

I also believe a lot of the BG services are not necessary if proper maintenance has been done to your vehicle.

Example: Engine oil plus service.

Copied from the web site

Symptoms:

  • Poor fuel efficiency
  • Loss of power

Features:

  • Cleans micro passageways in gasoline direct injection engines
  • Cleans stubborn oil deposits
  • Restores engine balance and power
  • Improves spark plug life

Benefits:

  • Reliable engine performance
  • Money saved at the pump
  • Longer oil change interval

Its an engine flush I believe. Not needed if proper oil changes have been done.

I have used off the shelf fluids for over 50 years in my vehicles. Never had a problem with motors or transmissions and I keep my bought used vehicles a long time and put a lot of miles on them.

All service shops would use fluids that meet OEM specs I would think so it comes down to price for the service if you can't do them yourself.

Amsoil and the other brand fluids in this category are above average quality and cost more. Personal choice if that cost is worth it to you.

The important thing is doing the fluid changes so use what you like.

:)

OP, I think the reason this has gone towards the BG chemicals is because they are well known.  I have to admit, I had no idea they even had a line of oils until this thread.  Therefore, I can't comment on the quality.  Apparently, no one else so far can either.

As for $250 for all 3 cases, seems a touch high to me.  The front and rear diffs will hold about 5 qts total at approx, $15/qt and the Tcase holds around 2 quarts.  That's about $100 in fluids, the rest is labor.  This really shouldn't take a professional with a lift and the propped tools more than 1 hour.  It took me about 1.5 hours to do mine on the floor of my garage.  So unless they charge $150/hr at this shop, it seems to be $50 - $75 high to me.

This is just my opinion and I am by no means a professional mechanic.

thanks!  they said all in it should be less than an hour...(30-45 mins) so your logic sounds right...I didn't do much research on the diff fluids yet, but I thought the T-case held a bit more than that...so I wasn't quite sure...thanks for the help...this is what I needed spelled out for me a bit! haha!

According to my ex son in law who went with their service there’s a warranty when using their products and service. Something that a quick lube type service normally wouldn’t offer. I imagine it’s like buying a TV at Walmart you can pay extra for a warranty. I’m sure it’s a good product you’re paying more just in case.

Not sure what product bg recommend for the transfer case vs what gm recommends in the current trucks.
But in my 2005 suburban ( wife's)gm recommended GM's auto Trac fluid due to the clutches.
Had my dealer change all fluids trans, t - case, front and rear diff. It was winter time, and within 300 miles I started noticing 4 wd issues ( only 4 wd, doesn't do it in 2 wd), dealer started throwing one of the electronic parts on to it that was supposedly bad. Next weekend I drive it and it's snowing again, same problem.
Call dealership get it in and they think it's another bad module. Replace it too. Still no change when I pick it up.... Still snowing, and now it smells like it's burning axle fluid smell. So I go out when I get home and lay in the snow and pull the plug to see if they put fluid in t- case and front axle...
Well, they put axle fluid from bg In my t case also!!
I'm pissed, go back to them and WTF?
They tell me that's what bg recommend for my t case, and the BG rep said the same thing when I take to them!
Wtf gear lube in a modern t -case that had clutches this truck was not from the 70's.
Bg put $200 towards my t case that grenaded all the clutches in 978 miles from the time the fluid was changed.
This truck was never driven hard, it had the original front and rear brakes still at 100,000 miles.
Find out what fluid they recommend first!!!
I never would have let them put gearcase oil in my t -case had I known that's what they recommended!

Quick answer:  $250 is an excellent price.  I just paid $350 to have my transfer case and front/rear differential fluid changed at the dealer.  An independent mechanic quoted me $325.  I went with the dealer since I had to take my truck in for some other warranty work.  In this case, I just had the dealer install the regular old OEM fluid.

As for BG, they make great products though.  Some of the best in the industry.  Contrary to what another user posted, their transmission fluid exchange is actually one of the only safe methods of properly changing the fluid.  They have a machine that utilizes the transmissions own fluid pumps to cycle the old fluid out and the new fluid in so that nothing is "forced" in or out, therefore properly protecting your transmission and it's internal seals and gaskets.  This is an expensive service though.  Mine ran about $500 I think, but it changes out pretty much 100% of the original fluid.  The transmission runs great, other than the crappy GM tune.  My plan is/was to do this full fluid exchange at 50,000 miles, and then at 100k miles, I'll just do the simpler pan drop, filter change, and lost fluid replacement.  50k miles after that, I can do another full flush and just keep alternating for as long as I own the vehicle.

I wouldn't hesitate at all to use BG fluids in your transfer case or differentials.  They'll have a GM approved speced fluid so there are no issues there.  I'd say jump on that $250 deal and don't worry any more about it.

UPDATE:  My estimate on my BG transmission service change is incorrect above.  I forgot that bill also included an approximately $100 charge for a synthetic oil change and tire rotation.  So the transmission flush alone would've been around the $400 mark.
