Long story short, i'm looking for a structural engineer to review some plans I have for a carport at my house.

My city won't allow a permit unless I have a letter from a structural engineer stating it should be good to go.

Apparently most carports are engineered "kits" that have been tested for modern building codes.

I'm buying all the metal loose and welding it all myself, so they want a structural engineer to give it a look over.

And i'm 100% certain, if a tornado rolls through again, my carport will be standing long after a good amount of those BS kits they allow to go up, have been blown over.

So any structural engineers on here? :-)

Haha. They’d still require one I’m sure...

every time I have to pull a permit, we start looking to move! Hate dealing with those building inspection people. They’re nice and polite but some of the rules are just ridiculous!

Sounds like our Government.

New Double expensive Automotive/Home A/C refrigerant and forcing your washing machine to only add about a gallon of water to wash a load of laundry!

There’s usually loopholes.

One here, if it is not attached to a building, no enclosed sides...exempt from a permit.

Fine print....there is firecode where they still need their access so many feet from a dwelling...yadada... But there are loopholes.

I’m in the process of building a house in CA. You wouldn’t believe the crap they have made me go through just to get grading permits. It’s been over a year and I still don’t have approved grading or building permits.

I retired from construction and a lot of home builders said they would never do it again.

The building codes are a good thing IMO. They protect the home buyer.

I seen non permitted work that the buyer had problems with down the road.

IMO one current product available is the Shark Bite.

People think it's a cure all.

Never use one then hide it, bury it, cover it with drywall etc. It should be accessible for ever.

It can fail.

My city requires a permit for EVERYTHING.

Its insane. I only pull permits for exterior stuff though.

I haven’t found any loophole that would help me in any way.

Well except the patio cover I’m building.

If I attach it to my house, that has a shingled roof, I can build the patio cover out of all metal. If it’s not attached, it has to match the house shingles. (Seems ass backwards to me!) but anyhow the loophole is 2 “L” brackets and 2 lag bolts to my chimney and it’s now an “attached” patio cover. Allowing it to be all metal.

I refuse to use shark bite!!! It’s a failure waiting to happen that’s gonna result in a wet mess.
