GM Earns Award From The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) For Silverado

General Motors has earned the "Automotive Excellence Award" for its innovations on the new generation Silverado. The award was presented to GM by The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI). The GM Silverado design earned the award for its innovative use of advanced high-strength steel. The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado has a body structure composed of nearly 86 percent steel. That includes ultra-high-strength steel (UHSS), advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) and high strength low alloy (HSLA) materials in the Silverado's cab, bed, and frame. The use of these strong, but lightweight materials contributed to the new Silverado's mass reduction. During the all-new Silverado's launch presentation, GM President Mark Reuss told the audience that the head of a hammer is steel. He added, “I don’t know how much work you’d get done with an aluminum hammer.”

"Automotive Excellence Award winners use advanced high-strength steel in applications to provide the best value for OEMs and consumers while also improving vehicle performance and sustainability," said Jody Hall, vice president of the automotive market at SMDI. "With automakers shifting their vehicle mix to favor trucks, CUVs and SUVs, new steel grades are leading the way in innovation. The 2019 Silverado is a great example of the capability of these next generation steel grades."


The new 2019 Silverado is 450 pounds lighter than the outgoing truck (crew cab V8 models). High strength steel makes the frame stronger, and stiffer, and also lighter. The cargo bed is also a new lighter, stronger steel.

Aluminum wheels and driveshaft held up better than the steel.

What an idiot. Why doesn't he just make fun of the 'man-step' again while he's at it. Ford sales just keep going up while GMs are in the toilet and this mentality is exactly why.

Jeff... you hit the nail on head.  (no pun intended) While I am certain there are some very dedicated and awesome people working for GM, we often are left feeling like the big wigs do not want to be or are not willing to do what is required to build superior products that they can stand behind and take pride in.  Crapota and Honda knew they were building crap back in the early 80s and in order to survive they knew they needed to improve big time.  By the late 80s, they had successfully revamped their vehicles, (with Nissan and a few others trailing, but not too far behind) And people began to take notice of the reliability of the heavy hitters like the Accord, Civic, Camary, and Corolla.  Lexus and Acura were launched and other than a rough few first years, those models became extremely popular.  People could now buy a vehicle that was essentially engineered to last 300,000+ miles with minimal repairs required.  During the 80s, vehicles like the Chevy Caprice and Ford Taurus were best sellers, and then the late 80s the Honda and Crapotas and Nissan Maximas came to light.  (along with the Toyota and Nissan little piddly trucks and the Toyota 4-Runner and Nissan Pathfinders)  All during this time.. what were the execs at the big 3 doing? 


Now we live in an age where passenger vehicles are less popular in the states, we see brands being done away with, we see Ford and GM eliminating more sedans..  But.. Look what happened with Hyundai. 


Hyundai was around in the late 80s and early 90s, providing.. well the worst of the worst.  Cheap pieces of crap.  Unreliable.  But come 2003ish, we saw some drastic changes from Hyundai and Kia.  All of the sudden, their reliability was improving, and they launced that 100,000 mile/10 year powertrain warranty.  And then people REALLY began to take notice.  While they still were fighting reliability issues through most of 2000-2010, things were improving drastically.  And they were selling.  By 2013, they had moved up into the top 5 reliability brands out there.  They had successfully changed a tarnished brand into one that got respect.  How did they do this?  Reverse engineered stuff from Japan Europe, and America?  Probably.  Hyundai and Kia like to copy the exterior models of other manufacturers quite often.. ever see a Honda Accord look-alike, or Toyota Corolla look alike?  Ever see components in their vehicles that look like copies from out of a Toyota or Honda or Nissan?  That is my biggest pet peeve with them. 


I say all of that to say- GM Ford and Dodge brands still have tarnished reputations they need to fix.  And to fix this, they need to earn consumer trust back.  how do they do this?  By building a superior/supurb vehicle, with a warranty they will stand behind and for prices that are reasonable. 


I have been hitting on loyalty means nothing to manufacturers now a days, and I still believe it.   In most of the VPs and Executives eyes, we are replaceable.  One dissatisfied customer doesn't bother them because they are others out there who will buy from them... but what they fail to fully realize is 1 dissatisfied customer can turn off 10 other potential customers. 


I like GM vehicles overall.  I give the new silverado and sierra a hard time because I don't care for the way they look, but other than the looks I am sure they are great trucks, just like the GMT-900s, 800s, and the old built like a rock 1988-1999 trucks and SUVs were.  I have owned numerous GM sedans over the years from Buick, Pontiac, and Chevrolet.  All were great cars.   I drove a 2018 Impala the other day, a rental.  Had about 30,000 miles on it, V6, but it was a great car.  Hell I owned a brand new 2013 Impala as well.. had the same engine and tranny that the 2018 did.. 3.6L VVT 305HP 6 speed tranny- it was the first passenger sedan that felt like a real car with real power and it was nice to see GM step into direct injection market for reals.  But... They never sold well.  Thus the Impala is discontinued after this year I believe.  What a shame.

If people are running their lives that close to the pin that they have to count the difference in fuel saving from steel to aluminum then perhaps they should not own a car/truck.

      Hey y'all, having issues with my 2015 Silverado. Towards the end of a 300+ mile road trip my truck's engine shut off while stopped at the turnoff of an exit. I restarted it drove to a gas station and then started it again to go home with no more issues. In the morning I had a hard start then drove to my job site and while I was waiting to go in parked in my parking spot the engine shut off again so I restarted it again. It ran about 5 minutes then shut off again. When i went to restart it my check engine light popped on, dash reads reduced engine power, and it will crank not start. I popped on my code reader and I am showing   three codes p1682, p0650, and p062b. I have 113k miles. Does anyone have any ideas????

      Hey guys,
      I got a 2015 Silverado 5.3l. 138,250km. started ticking sometime last winter. Would happen instantly at start up and last about 5 minutes then would fade away. Sounded like a lifter. Took it to the dealer they said they couldn't hear it. Sound went away so left it.
      Fast forward to this winter and as Soon as the weather started to cool down I noticed the ticking again.
      Took it back to the dealer said they couldn't hear it again. I went and picked up my truck right at closing, soon as I fired her up the sound was there but everyone was gone so no one to hear it. I took a video. Next day I called the dealer, sent the video. Took like a week to get back to me. In the meantime I had taken videos pretty much every time I started it.
      Long story short after a brief fight with them about them trying to say it's normal etc they agreed that it sounded like a noise coming from the valve train. Left my truck with them, they called me said they had to change all lifters. Went to pick up my truck and on start up the sound is still there.
      This was a month ago. Sent more videos and a previous video from before they did the work and they are saying they can't hear it again.
      Took it in in person they agreed that there's an issue again and they will look at it. Now they are saying it's possible bad injector noise but they can't figure out which one 🙄.
      In the meantime I took it to another dealership they changed the vacuum pump. After that the sound changed. Now it's no longer at start up but once the truck has reached operating temperature and is more of a dull sound. Took it back to that same dealer who did the vacuum pump and they said valve train noise and deffo not injectors. But they won't work on it because the other dealer already did. 
      They didn't change the VLOM or the cam. I had/have no check engine lights. Truck runs awesome. Sometimes rough idle.
      Any ideas what it could be?

      Hi and thanks to take the time to read my story.
      I just bought a Silverado 1500 6 cil. Mod. 2007
      Everything works great except the gearbox make the trrrrrr noise when I engage the third shift. All other works great. 
      I also feel that the clutch is a bit hard to press... I need more muscle or it's normal.
      The first and the reverse engage without trouble.
      Tomorrow I will check the oil inside the transmission.

      Well guys, I finally broke 30,000 miles yesterday.  It has been an amazing experience so far and I am very blessed to own this truck.
      I special ordered my LT Trail Boss back in May 2018 and picked it up in September 2018.  I have almost every option that you can order on it except the sunroof (would have delayed my production at the time).  My truck was built the very first week of production (7/09/2018) and is one of only a small handful of Red Silverados, if not the only one, to receive the Gideon/Dark Atmosphere leather interior as that color was changed to not an option for Red Silverados on the second week of production.  Within the first week or two of receiving it, I installed a custom Electronic Cutout System for my exhaust, Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ 33.5x12.5R20 mud tires, an Undercover Ultra Flex tonneau cover, and vinyl wrapped the scoop portion of my hood.  Later on, I installed some cosmetic hood vents.  Then, about two weeks ago, I installed the Trail Boss / AT4 specific ReadyLift +2” lift kit, giving me a total of 4” inches of lift.  This allowed me to run 35x12.5s and I am loving the new taller stance of my truck more and more every day.
      I have driven my Trail Boss all over the place, in a wide variety of conditions and never had any major issues.  From -15 degree weather to over 100 degrees, this truck has performed excellent.  The only two problems I have ever had (which are resolved) was a Bluetooth sync issue very early on for a few months and a random, once-in-a-blue-moon appearance of the ESC light only to have it go away at next start up.  Both of these issues have been long gone now and I couldn’t be happier with the truck.  If I had to make a list of my favorite options, it would be the Trail Boss trim level, Safety Package I, and Convenience Package II.  In my opinion, the Trail Boss trim gives this Silverado a unique look and a tough image.  The blacked-out appearance along with the “Trail Boss” name just emphasizes that this is one bad truck (in a good way).  The Safety Package I has saved my skin so many times and in my opinion it is a must have.  The Rear Cross Traffic Alert gives you advanced warning of vehicles/pedestrians that may cross your path as you reverse, and the Side Blind Spot detectors are a huge plus in giving you peace of mind when making a lane change.  Furthermore, the Convenience Package II adds some nice creature comforts that I can’t really live without.  The Bose stereo w/ subwoofer hits loud and crystal clear.  The rear sliding window provides nice airflow in the summer months and the garage door HomeLink buttons are a nice touch.  The one thing that I do not have because it was not available in 2019 on the Trail Boss is the 6.2 L.  This is now an option for 2020 Trail Boss trims, and I am kind of upset that it wasn’t offered in 2019.  I would not trade in my truck over this, but I really wanted the bigger motor.  That being said, the 5.3 L in this new gen T1 truck is much quicker and more responsive than the 2018 and prior trucks.  It may have to do with the weigh savings this new gen truck has, in addition to the new Dynamic Fuel Management system, which is seamless and unnoticeable.  Whatever the reason, this truck has a lot of pep, even in 5.3 L form.  Overall, I am very happy with this truck and the way it has performed, and I look forward to another 30,000 miles.  Any questions just ask.
      Disclaimer: No one pressured me to write this review, nor did GM have any contact with me about it.  This is my honest opinion on how I feel about the truck and I hope this review helps anyone thinking about buying one to make the right decision for them.
