Will my MPG hurt if I install Exhaust?

Recommended Posts

That’s a good question but one that will draw out criticism from some of the forum trolls. To be honest, when considering an exhaust I’ve never thought about mpg’s just the sound quality and only if it would add HP. GM has a cat back system they claim adds at least 10HP more, give it a look and being that you’ve got a new 19 I’d definitely ask your dealership these same questions and save yourself some time by communicating with other 19 model owners with that same experience you’re asking for. Good luck!

Yeah the only problem with my 19 is that it's a legacy model. Meaning 18 bodystyle with bits and parts of both 19 and 18 trucks. The exhaust GM has I've asked and called GM and they said it's not made for my truck. True when getting an exhaust no one thinks about the MPG just how good it sounds. But I am just doing it to get a bit more engine noise for towing purposes.

If it’s the 18 5.3 then you should be able to use the one designed for it. There’s also exhaust systems ready for the new body style and engines as well, call BORLA and chat with them about it, they’ve got great products and customer service too.

I put a Borla S Type catback exhaust system on my 2018 5.3 Crew cab and after around 3000 miles my gas mileage has gone up 1.6 mpg . I keep my foot out of the firewall though.

I had the stock system on my 14, drove it for 25 - 35k miles. Installed a Gibson cat back system and drove it for about the same amount of miles. Gas mileage stayed roughly the same since my driving habits don't change much. Lost torque though. Then I changed the intermediate pipe size from the Gibson 3 in back to the stock 2.75 inch and left the Gibson system on. Gained the noticeable torque back and the MPG stayed the roughly the same. Installed the stock system back on, did the muffler delete trick. So now I have the sound I like, the torque and the roughly the same mpg minus the dual tail pipes. My 14 had just over 95k on it now. So I would same your money and just do the muffler delete. Just my opinion though.

Yeah I just need more engine noise not for pleasure but for when I'm going up steep grades fully loaded I like to control my gears my self so I like to hear the engine so I have an idea if I need to downshift or upshift i dont want to blow up the engine up know.

I thought these trucks still had tachometers...

They do but I've have come across where even at 2800 to 3400 RPMS the engine sounded like it still needed to downshift again but the tow haul mod wouldn't let it drop another gear. So I like to go more based of engine noise instead of the tac.

Your not going to blow anything up a 3400 rpms.  It's not even working that hard

I know I will not blow anything up put going up hill I am losing speed at that RPM and usually when I go up grapevine with 9100lbs I need to be within 4600 to 5600RPM

Just remember the motor is designed to have back pressure and if you remove something that affects that, it'll mess up the stock tune. Think of a 2 stroke with an expansion chamber--you change the chamber size, it affects the power and you have to tune it accordingly.

Hey peeps,  I have a 15 GMC sierra 1500, it has the max tow package, with a 5.3, 6l80e, and 3.73 gears.  What kind of fuel mileage are people getting with the same set up.  I have some buddies that have similar rides, both 15 GMC's one has 3.08 gears a 5.3 with a  speed and the other is 6.2 and an 8 speed with 3.42 they both get over 24 mpg.  Anyone out there getting 19-20 on the highway like mine?

      Hi all,

Now that I am a bit older with a family, the days of extreme loud exhaust in sport cars / trucks has come to somewhat of an end.  I have a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3l.  About a year ago I decided to try out the Magnaflow cat back 3" and had a horrible drone through pretty much the entire RPM range.  I tried everything to calm the drone but nothing seemed to work.  I tried a couple of Borla exhaust systems and still too loud of a drone.  I wanted to share a new cat back exhaust I just had installed that I am more than pleased with. The exhaust is handcrafted by MRT Performance in Plymouth Michigan, near where I live. They use T304 piping and they spent a lot of time developing and perfecting a bad a$$ muffler with a drone rating of 1 out of a 10 scale. Meaning 1 is almost no drone. The exhaust tip comes welded on and nice exhaust clamps are included.  A buddy recommended them to me after my numerous failed attempts of finding a low drone, performance exhaust.  I wanted to share this because I have read other posts about guys wanting performance exhaust but without the loudness / extreme drone. I have to tell  you that I am so impressed and so relieved the drone, that was giving me headaches, is now gone!  The low nice sounding rumble is there that at cruising speeds, and going WOT gives me that ear to ear grin! Normally I would not post about products I buy, but I had to share this newest purchase. The nice thing is I can have normal conversations at all RPM levels.  The cool thing is MRT posted two nice videos of interior and exterior sounds using their Silverado test vehicle. I purchased the MRT Deep & Mellow cat back.    They do ship their systems too. I attached some photos of my truck with the completed system in place. Trying to decide between a corsa or borla exhaust for the Silverado 5.3 with the dual rear exit. Not many videos besides the one corsa video on YouTube.

      Hello everyone,

Lets get a small thread going on towing MPG. Please show what you towed, rough weight, and maybe a small map of your route.
Please also add what you have

On a 268.7 mile trip to the lake, i was able to get 13.4MPG. 3/4 highway doing 60-68mph and 1/4 city.
Towed just fine for roughly 3500Lbs.
      TRIM: LT
      MOTOR: 5.3L DFM
      TRANS:8-speed
      4x4?: 4x4

I like the fact that my 6.2 has lots of power and actually does get good gas mileage. I can run 65/70 and easily get 23-25mpg. I’m about to upgrade tires and looking for recommendations.  I know I’ll lose some mpg and possibly low end power, but I don’t want to turn my beast of a truck into a turd.

I currently have stock 275/55r20 (31.9x10.8) on stock “snowflake” rims with Bilstein 2” strut/shock upgrade.

3 tire sizes I’m interested in:
      275/60r20 (33x10.8)
      285/55r20 (32.3x11.2)
      295/55r20 (32.8x11.6)

If I had my way, I’d throw a 305/55r20 on there but I know I’d kill my power. I know this because I have 295/55r18 on my Ford and I ended up doing a gear swap from .373 to .456 to bet my power back.

I’m in the real estate business. I buy and sell farm and recreational land so I put lots of hwy miles on this GMC yet still need a tire to get me in and out of places on the farm and pull a tractor when I need to. I have trucks to mudbogg in, looking for practicality here.

Really hoping to to hear from guys with 6.2s.

      Thanks in advance.
