Brake Pedal Vibration - Higher Speed Braking

Recommended Posts

2015 GMC Yukon Denali - 32k miles (6.2L + 8spd).  I don't normally do highway speed but noticed yesterday that I had a slight pedal vibration when doing so and it only seems to happen at 60+ mph.  My daily drive is under 40mph and no vibrations there.  I'm assuming its likely a rear rotor since I don't feel it in the steering wheel.

I looked back on my records and it appears front brakes were at 7mm a year ago and rear at 4mm.  Both in the "green" according to dealer.  I'm not sure if its an eyeball check and they just mark good or if they actually measure but it was 10k miles ago and a year so I likely need new pads.

All this to say, with this life and mileage is anyone seeing pad life and possibly rotor life exhausted so quickly?  This is a heavy vehicle and the 6.2L gets it up to speed quickly and it does seem to take a lot more to stop it(always this way so I don't think its the vacuum recall).

If anyone is getting a 4 wheel brake job at the dealer, what has it run you?  Mine is running a special for $139 per axle for pads and $189 per axle for rotors but I'm hoping if it is a warped rotor I only need 1 pair.

Also noticed this on the front passenger rotor.  Is that defined of a groove normal?  To the touch it doesn't feel grooved.

Tire inflation is normal.

Just had all four rotors replaced and still experiencing high speed vibrations, so I wouldn't bet on it being a rotor issue.

Just to be clear, the vibration was while braking, correct?

How many miles did you go through before doing this and did you do pads too?  What was the cost?

I have both a braking issue and "the Chevy shake". Bought the car CPO @53k miles, rotors were merely resurfaced at the time. Brought it in for the vibration issues at around 59K, was told the issue was the rotors so they replaced them for free under warranty. Suffice it to say, issue still exists now at about 62K.

Is there a service bulletin for the Chevy shake issue?  Are you talking about the TCC vibration (light acceleration at 60+ MPH around 1200 RPM) combined sometimes with AFM? - If not, not familiar with the chevy shake.

check for bent rim  or rocks in the tire (see if it balanced )

i had removed about 1/2 pound of pebbles from my tires   still did not fix the vibration

turn out to be a bent rim

but it did ride a bit smoother after about 2 hours of picking out rocks

Bridgestone tires is a geologist  aka rock collector

I'll give it a go but wouldn't you expect it to vibrate regardless of braking if it were unbalanced due to bent rim or rocks?  My issue is only while braking at 60+ MPH.  I do know I have some rocks in it but not that much.  Continental tires on my (OE) although they were replaced at 10K due to a recall.

I get mine balanced and rotated every oil change and have seen the balance weights on it.  Another thing I saw to check for is any play the wheel has.

Hello, I noticed on my 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500hd 6.0 the brake lights were out. Looking further into it it’s only while the headlights are on and the truck is running, all is working fine while truck is off. As soon as I start the truck the brake lights work until I turn on the headlights, then they fade off like they loose power. The turn signals work fine either way and they are on the same led. I’m confused, I can’t find anything wrong. Thanks in advance!

      I have a 2020 HD Silverado Diesel.
I noticed after several hundred mile a weried sensation coming from the steering column. When I’m driving down the  highway for example and driving straight , when I turn the steering wheel slightly to the left of right I feel a slight vibration and is if there is play in the steering column. Like a disconnect feeling. There’s almost a slight grinding feel like it might be coming from the steering box. When I’m turning on a long turn left or right I can really feel it, negative feedback reverberating through the steering column.
Dealership has replaced the steering ad steering box, put on new front tires and torque all suspension parts up front. After all these repairs I still get this vibrations, shimming feeling in and through the steering column. Also when the truck is idling with foot on brake and I turn the steering wheel slight to the left or right I get a slight vibration in steering snd I can feel it in the brake pedal. I’m very frustrated because I got a call today from dealership and there basically are now saying it’s within the factory spec of vibration.
I dislike this feeling the steering column has this bad feedback I can feel in the steering column. I’ve let three people drive the truck and they all are feeling what I’m feeling. Any help or advice would be welcome... Thank you

Long history but short of it is long standing vibration seems to be related to tire temperature.

2015 GMC Yukon.  New Tires (Bridgestone Dueler HL) 1/31/2020 w/Alignment.  They noticed front right strut was leaking and replaced.  Vehicle seemed to drive without issue for at least 2-3 months.

COVID-19 hit and I hardly drove anywhere for a few months.  There was a month span where my truck left the garage only a handful of times.  Tires have 3k miles on them despite being 9 months old now.

Around July I started driving a bit more and I noticed a pretty bad road vibration and started looking at remaining shocks.  Replaced 2 years and it seemed to help as they were leaking and then remaining front strut as it was leaking hoping this would resolve my issue.

Took it to the dealer and they road force balanced and rotated, not finding any suspension or tire issues.  When I drove away, there was a hard pull to the left.  Took it to local shop as I figured it was an alignment but alignment was dead on.  They road force balanced and rotated and pull went away.  I later found out one of the tires had conicity and was replaced and pull went away.

This week in Houston we had a bit of a cold front and I noticed it was driving back to normal, like earlier in the year.

Yesterday I was driving around and noticed as soon as the tires started to heat up to 38psi (Cold tire pressure is 35psi), the vibration started to get worse so I pulled over and deflated 2 psi.  Next tire got up to 38 and vibration started and I did the same thing and it went away for 10 minutes but came back as the tires seemed to warm up and inflate more due to that.

Today I drove trying to reproduce and it seemed to drive better than yesterday and took about 40 mins to get some vibrations that were not even as bad as they have been before.

Am I working out some flat spotting?  Or is it possible that some tires that have issues that show when they warmed up?  Or is it possible I have a suspension issue that slightly under-inflated tires are masking?

I plan on going back to the dealer and have them run a picoscope to confirm the source of the vibration and look again.  Questions I should be asking them, things I should verify they're checking, etc?  This issue has been driving me crazy for months and seems to be going away on its own due to cold temp (55-60F in the mornings, high of 85F) versus the triple digits we were getting in the summer.

Looking back at the Jan-March timeframe it would have been around the same temp here so I'm wondering if I'm exposing a temperature related issue with the tires that shows up when the ambient temp is much warmer or the tires have a chance to get hotter.

I have the full story documented here before I even thought it might be tire related
