I signed up for GM-Trucks.com, so I could post this topic about this cover. I'm normally not one to post much, but since I can't add reviews to BAKs website or any of the resellers without a review invite after purchase I have no way of getting this information to people looking to purchase this cover for a 2019 GMC Sierra. My truck is the 2019 Sierra Denali 1500, but this post will apply to the SLT, AT4, and Denali.

BAK is currently selling this cover and packaging it for both the 2019 Silverado and Sierra. They should have two completely separate covers but are refusing to resolve the issue completely. I wrote up a huge product assessment/resolution document on the product and tried working with manufacturing on resolving the issue, but it was only partially fixed. The primary issue is the Silverado and Sierra have a 1/4" bed width difference at the tailgate. That is because of the multi-pro tailgate. BAK must have originally assumed they were both the same width. If you already purchased a cover check and see if your tailgate section of the cover (plastic bumper to plastic bumper) is 57" or 57 1/4". If your cover is 57" you have the non-adjusted cover and your plastic bumpers are probably not sitting into the metal rail lips correctly. After all my work with BAK they finally agreed the width was not the same and sent me a cover that increased the width at the tailgate by 1/4", but still sent it in the same box with Silverado/Sierra on the side. My guess is they are going to continue sending the same cover with the additional 1/4" added on and not really fixing the issue. Hopefully the extra 1/4" don't cause an issue for 2019 Silverado owners. The second part of the issue is the 2019 Sierra has a longer bed length than the Silverado, so the rear tailgate seal does not touch the tailgate. I don't think the seal will fit that well on the Silverado either after doing the measurements but didn't have a to physically test. You wouldn't know how well the seal was working unless you got into the bed and close the tailgate. I can open the multi-pro top section and see the seal wasn't close to touching. Also, the middle of the multi-pro tailgate will not close easily with the cover closed. BAK did nothing to address this issue when I brought it up.

If you purchase this cover with the known issues when mounting the cover, you have to slide the covers bed rails back toward the tailgate as far as you can without it hitting the tailgate, in order for the cover to sit in the track rails correctly. Don't push them forward against the front part of the bed or the cover will not slot in the groove correctly. When building my resolution guide for BAK I shimmed my second replacement cover by ¼” total front to back (1/8" strip on each rail) and it allowed the cover to fit in the rails without any rail adjustments. I recommended to BAK to increase the total cover width by 1/4" front to back and they choose to only add the 1/4" by the tailgate. My assumption was they did this, so they didn't have to build two separate covers. I was very disappointed in all the effort I put into showing them the exact problems including all the measurements and them not resolving the problem 100%. This product should have never made it past quality control.

The overall build of the product is very solid and I'm happy it's made in the USA, but the fitment is terrible. Even worse if you have the one at 57".

Note1: Make sure your cover sits into the rails correctly and don’t stick over the ledge. The cover will still work if it sits over the small metal lip, but this will wear out the plastic bumpers and may not let the rubber seal work correctly.

Note2: If you have the cover at 57" width at the tailgate I recommend you check and have BAK send you an updated cover or add 1/8" aluminum strips (can find at Menards) to each side of the rails. The aluminum strips work, but it puts the rubber water seal near the rear of the bed really close to the edge. It wasn't acceptable for me but does allow the cover to sit in the rails correctly.

I attached the PDF document that I created for BAK with all my measurements and recommendations on resolving the issue if anyone wants to see more detail into why the cover isn't fitting. Feel free to use this PDF document if you have any issues with BAK about getting the cover replaced with warranty.

I don't know how BAK stays in business, seems like lots of complaints... Why did you chose their product over Truxedo's Sentry?

Posted (edited)

Imcrazy: I looked at the Truxedo's Sentry before buying the Revolver X4, but I liked the overall look of the BAK Revolver X4 more. It was a lot more low profile. I put the Truxedo TonneauMate toolbox in my truck but just couldn't go with the cover. If they would make a low profile flush cover like BAK I would definitely consider it. It all comes down to the style you want on your truck. If it wasn't for the style of the cover I would have never put the effort I did into trying to help them fix the broken product. I was hoping in the end if I gave them everything to resolve the issue they would actually do something, but guess they just want to do the bare minimum.

While I do not have the GMC, I do have the Silverado and I have nothing but great things to say about the BAK cover, I love it, no issues at all.

Glad your's is working fine! Looking through past reviews on other sites I saw most 2019 Silverado owners saying good things about the cover. The primary issue is BAK most likely built the cover using the Silverado for R&D and never did any test fitting on the Sierra. Years past the Sierra/Silverado was very similar across the board, but this multi-pro tailgate threw off the bed dimensions and they never accounted for it. The cover is overall nice, but the fitment needs more attention. Only time will tell if they actually resolve the rest of the issues I brought up to them.

I purchased the X4 about a month ago for my AT4,I had an X2 on my 2014 AT and never had an issue. I messed with the X4 for hours trying to figure out what I did wrong during install as it was just not fitting correctly width wise  . Was not me , I called BAK and they told me to take pics and send to them . I did this and they got back to me , said it was a known issue and they could either send out shims or replace my cover.Well I requested a new cover .They sent me out a new cover and all was good. Was I happy that the first one with issues ? No , but the customer service rep was fantastic during the whole process .

My buddy has the X2 on his 2018 and the biggest difference is they didn't add the lip to the inner edge of the rails, which allowed a little more play side to side. The X4 adds the lip to keep the cover from shifting, which is nice, but the measurements need to be within a closer tolerance opposed to the X2. It's been about a month since I worked with them on resolving the primary issue by adding the 1/4" at the tailgate on the cover. I bet if you measure the rear section bumper to bumper it will show 57 1/4".  They tried blaming it on the truck beds being different sizes at first from the factory and I had to prove them wrong as you can read in the PDF I attached. If you have the rails pushed all the way forward with the bumpers touching the front part of the bed your plastic bumpers may not be sitting in the rails 100%. You may notice some 1/16" or 1/8" of the rubber sitting on top of the metal lip. It may only show in a few places, but not in others. The main problem at this point is they didn't address the issue with the rail length, rear tailgate seal or closing the middle section of the tailgate. Sliding the rails more toward the back of the tailgate lets the seal touch the tailgate just barely as well. Glad you were able to get the more updated version though. Before I was able to get them making the new cover it didn't fit at all like your first cover unless you used 1/8" shims on each side.

I will say the customer service was fine across the board. It's the manufacturing facility that is not 100% correcting everything. I learned this after working with BAK for over a month on some type of resolution.

I first put a Bak Roll X on my 2015 GMC Denali, then onto my 2017 Denali and just put it on my 2020 Denali. I verified the current Revolver II for 2017 and 2020 were different p/ns. I finally found out there was a 1/4" difference between the two versions. I was going to install the Roll X on the 2020 first, before I shelled out another $900. for the new version. I figured if I need 1/4" or 1/8" spacers, I'd have my companies' tool room make them up for me, but I didn't need them. I installed the Roll X and took some time to adjust the unit to cover the tailgate, which meant at the cab end of the cover was closer to the back edge on the bed top rail, but it sealed fine. I have no illusions that any cover is water tight. Don't care as after 5 yrs seldom get more than a few drops of water. After installing the cover, that night we had a hell of a rain storm.. over 2" of rain. Next morning there was a pool of water on right side of the bed, behind the wheel well. I contribute that water to the stake pocket openings. The stake pocket covers I though would fit from the 2017 do not fit,,, seems GM downsized the pockets on the redesign, so waiting for new ones to arrive. I have no complaints on the Roll X cover, only issue is Bak attached their label to both sides using carbon steel pop rivets, which are totally rusted. Yet, if it bothered me enough, I'd drill them out and reattach with stainless steel pop rivets. The tail gate closes fine. with the whole tail gate or with the center portion only... Will reply back once the stake pocket covers are installed to see how the leaking has changed...

Interesting....what model number is your bedcover.  I just picked mine up (Part #79130) and the label clearly states that it's for a 5ft 8in bed and it's designated for 2019+ GM Silverado/Sierra.

The model number for the cover is not as critical as the wide of the tailgate section of the cover. The Silverado/Sierra beds are not the same sizes and BAK should be shipping separate covers for each truck. The PDF document I attached will explain more information about measurements.

While I wont disagree that the beds are a different widths, My biggest problem with the cover is the length front to rear.  I have to shift mine as far back as possible, while not comprising the seal at the front, to get it to contact the tailgate.  The inner rubber seal running side to side just barely touches the inside of the tail gate. The open area at each outer edge leaves in a lot of water in too.  This is a really disappointing level of waterproofing.

I usually run an ARE over the rail hard cover and knew I wouldn't be getting the same level of waterproofing but the fact that it doesn't fit well really aggravates the situation.

Interesting...Just curious as to why you say model number is not critical when model numbers are made specifically for certain vehicles.  Just curious if you are tyring to fit something it was not designed for?  I'm just saying that there seem to be a lot of people that have used bed covers from their older vehicles and they had to do some modificationg to fit while others who installed vehicle specific ones haven't had any issues.  Either way, good luck.  I hope you get your issue resolved.

Really? I wasn't about to reply back to your post because it sounds like you didn't read my post thoroughly and look through the PDF document. I'll reply back to you one more time in case others come here looking for additional details and see you talking about me trying to install the wrong cover or a used cover. I originally kept my answer to you short and simple to have you re-reference the PDF document if you had any questions on fitment.

This original post is almost a year old and I stated in the article that BAK resolved my issue, but not 100%. It was enough for me to deal with it. This write up was to warn other people. I'm aware different model numbers are for different vehicles. My reply to your post was directed at the Silverado/Sierra box model number. As I stated in the reference post, the model number is not critical because if the shipping box still says "Revolver X4 2019 GM Silverado, Sierra 5' 8' Bed" you are not getting the right cover if you own a Sierra. That is why I suggested referencing the PDF document. BAK should be shipping out separate boxes and different model numbers (One for Silverado & one for Sierra) to represent the fitment difference I explained in the post and the PDF document.

Of course, I was not trying to fit the wrong cover. I wouldn't have gone through all the troubles in returning covers to BAK, working with them on resolving the issue, and having them repair it to find that it was the wrong cover. My cover and the warrantied covers had the same model number you listed. My point is the two trucks do not have the same bed size. If you receiving a cover almost a year after I posted this article with the same box description and it is still 57" at the tailgate it means BAK never changed anything and the problems I explained above will still be present on the cover you received.

I just got the x4 for my 2021 Sierra AT4....Width wise it seems to be ok as far as I can see....but front to back is the issue. the tailgate doesnt even hit the rubber seal when shut....but I can't pull the cover any closer to the tailgate as the plastic pieces where the cord release is hits the metal of the rails and wont shut....I'm going to call them Monday and see what can be done, because as this is it will leak like a sieve.

I had the x2 on my 15 sierra and it fit much better and didnt leak at all. The tailgate pressed into that rubber seal really well.
