Anyone else get their rear window defrost recall letter?

Recommended Posts

Even with my rear defroster set to off, it still turns on with remote start like Sierra guy said. I noticed that anytime is was under about 35-40F it would. It just never turns on with the key.

I wonder if my glass coverage through my insurance would pay for the repair if mine goes boom.

As far as I know the young guy at work who had his rear window blow up didn't get insurance coverage on it as it was deemed a manufacturer defect which GM now admits months later.  Of course GM told him he physically broke the glass somehow and would not do anything either...

As a follow up I talked to Zach this morning ( the young guy who had his slider blow up in his 2014 Denali) and he confirmed what I thought.  Insurance said the manufacturer should cover it and it is not their problem as expected.  Gm's best offer at the time was to eat half the cost of the window and replacement which still would have been $1000 out of pocket to him.  He went to a local glass shop and for $400 had a solid rear window installed.  I imagine he should get his letter now lol.

Sure there is... they cut off your cord end and pull the defrost fuse.  Lol.  It will not surprise me that the "fix" for the rear slider will be a solid glass window replacement from these pricks.  They did that back 10 years ago with the windshield washer fluid heaters... just removed the heater and taped off the wires while leaving the switch for it in the dash.

And it bankrupt the supplier that supplied them.

And they fought with the outfit that bought the technology.

Nasty deal all the way around.

Well I can tell you now that if the fix is losing the rear slider I will just pull the wiring off the glass for the defrost circuit and leave my window intact.  I actually like my rear slider and open it frequently.  Rear defrost on the other hand is really meaningless to me.  I have a windshield defrost and heated side mirrors... I don't even look at the back window as I grew up driving trucks that didn't have one.  Funny too as even the more loaded work rigs the company guys run at work don't have rear defrost of any kind in the first place lol.

  • 1 month later...

Just had my fuse for the rear defog removed and checked that my side mirrors still heat up.

Just had another thought. My VIN # starts with a '3' which means that the truck was built in Mexico. Could it possibly be a quality control issue? No recall yet for trucks in USA and this might be due to the fact that their trucks are built in Canada or the USA. The northern US states get winters that are just as harsh as anything we get here in Canada. Just wondering!!

If it were just quality control, then presumably they would have fixed the qualify control problem and be able to install one that doesn't fail.  But they just pull the fuse because they don't have a fix for the problem, which says it's a design problem.  And given that it's been, what, a year, that they've been doing this (pulling the fuse), it doesn't seem like they are working very hard on fixing the problem.

My truck is from Fort Wayne Indiana so it has nothing to do with origin of assembly plant as that is the good ole US of A.  I just did my own recall and pulled the fuse as I am going to drive the truck for the first time in months lol.

All of the K2xx trucks.  2014 to 2018 half tons and 2015 to 2019 HDs.

My 2019 2500HD is a Canada built truck. I checked the NHTSA site for open recalls and nothing comes up for my truck when i search the VIN. Should it be on there already if it is affected? I didn't receive a letter either.
