Gear Hunting on inclines

Question

My 2014 Chevy Silverado has been "gear hunting" when I am driving downhill in the mountains. The last time, it would hunt and the rpm would jump between 2000 and 3000 but then jumped to 4000 rpm and held for about 5-10 seconds. My question is there any way to avoid this issue and is it bad for the transmission/engine?

Welcome to the site!

You are describing the "Grade Braking" system, are you seeing the message flash on the DIC just before it starts this?

You can disable it by holding the "Tow/Haul" button for 5-10 seconds each time you start the truck, or anytime while driving, but it has to be done each time the truck is driven.

Does the truck have over sized tires or are they correct and match factory spec. A lot of time people install after market larger tires and that affects shit points as the vehicle RPM do not match what the computer is thinking.
