"2015 Sierra Denali back up camera upgrade?"

Recommended Posts

Search returned no results??  Can't believe everyone is happy with the bad quality of the back up cameras on the 2015 trucks. I have a Denali, and for the top of the line truck, the camera is worse than a 20 year old consumer hand hold video camera. Seriously.

I've looked at various aftermarket options, but none of them say they are any better. Even Dorman simply says better lens material for better quality. Really? Same camera, better lens?

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted!

It also has to do with the resolution capability of the video hardware. So even if say you wanted/ found a 4k resolution cam the hardware would only support what came from factory likely 480p resolution or less. Im sure wams could chime in and give better advise or help understand more then me.

I think there was some interest for th3magpi3 to see about swapping in an HD screen from a 2019+ with a 3.0 HMI upgrade. This would help clarity probably. I’m not sure if he will be able to do this though. The 3.0 module might be the only realistic swap.

You can but at what cost. I did a full upgrade kept stock speakers for just over 900. And have way more than a factory upgrade would handle. I didnt even wanna spend this much but not many swaps with bose done

Has anybody actually tried upgrading to rear camera for 170 bucks I would expect, a crystal clear picture which this product does not provide however it is certainly an improvement.

Given that I just broke my tailgate handle I may be the guinea pig is the cost of replacing the tailgate bezel from GM is on par with the total replacement

I'm quite happy with the camera on my 2015 LT. I'd have to assume its exactly the same as yours.

I do find the picture looks like crap when the lens is dirty. But upon wiping it off with my moistened thumb, the picture is fine again. Your lens isn't all scratched up is it?

Appreciate all the replies, gentlemen. We have a solution, but as Zasker 1 said....it's not a really good one...but better.

To repeat, the stock camera is OK...well...not really. It isn't even wide enough angle to let you see anyone coming from the side in time to avoid them...and for things like hitching up the boat or trailer, no, it's not even "OK". My wife has a 3 year old Mazda 6 and her camera is crystal clear and far wider lens You can actually see a pedestrian 2 or 3 cars away so you won't back into them. Even my daughters older Honda has a better picture.

Yes, I've cleaned and polished the lens to no avail. The resolution just isn't there. If it's 300 lines I would be surprised.  As one who retired from Radio/TV/Film production...I do know a touch about clarity of images and how to achieve such.

My disappointment is... in a $60K truck, they put a $10 camera in it. The connector on the end is worth more than the camera.

If anyone has tried that $170 camera that "promises" 600 lines of resolution, (which is still way under todays cheapest Chinese dashcams), I'd appreciate a heads up.

Again, thanks... and I'm hoping we have others who haven't chimed in yet.

P.S. the idea of changing the entire system over to a new one is intriguing, to say the least, and maybe worth $1K or more , to do the upgrade. Grins!

I purchased my 2020, 2500 Duramax in September. I ordered it with the all of the trailering features.

I also ordered an auxiliary camera to attach my travel trailer, which I installed in November.

It worked great for the first two months.

Six weeks ago it stopped working completely.

I tried every combination of plugging and unplugging, cleaning connectors, switching between the interior and exterior jack.

Finally, I removed it from the trailer and took it to a Chevy dealer.

They let me plug it into one of their trucks to see if it was the camera or my truck that was the issue.

The camera did not work on their truck either.

Chevy sent me a replacement camera under warranty, which I received last week.

After installing it, it worked great for two days, then stopped.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

      Thank You

Just picked up a Denali Grille w/ camera and am wondering if anyone has done the install themselves and ran into any issues hooking up the camera? I’ve only seen a few videos online of the new body style sierra grille replacement but am unsure if the camera addition will give me any issues. All help appreciated!

Will be posting before and after photos as well??

I own a 2020 trail boss and it boggles my mind that GM did not offer a front facing camera on their off-road purpose TrailBoss! Not only would it be great for parking but even more important when approaching off road obstacles. Does anyone make or have installed a front facing OEM style camera that integrates with the RPO code IOS 7” screen?

I drive a 2020 Sierra 3500HD Denali 4X4.  Used mainly for towing a 5th wheel.  We purchased the GM rear-view trailer camera and had the RV dealer install it.  It works fine, but this has happened twice (out of maybe 40 hitchups) . . .

During the process of hitching up, everything works fine.  One of the last things we do is turn the engine off, plug the rear-view trailer camera in, and then restart the engine.  Cameras all work, we're good to go.  But then after we shift into gear, ALL the cameras go dead (except for the rear-view mirror).  We turn the truck off and restart . . . doesn't help.  We call our GMC salesman who helpfully suggests that we disconnect the battery, wait 15 seconds, and then reconnect so the system can reboot.  This works and we're off.  He also intimated that a software update from GM might fix the issue.  This has only happened during hitching up, never during an unhitched start-up.

Today we took the truck to the GMC dealer for routine maintenance and the Service guy said he is unaware of a bulletin, notice, or rumor regarding camera failure.

      Has this happened to you?
