Purpose of center console slot

What is the purpose of the plastic slot in the middle of the center console armrest? Looking at new trucks, and I’ve never understood this design?

In the previous generation, the wireless charger was there for your phone. In this generation, I guess you can still put your phone there if you want, but the charger is in the front half of the console instead (if equipped).

I put my iPhone there every day. I used to put it down in the center console area under the accessory switches/buttons, but I like it here more. Easier to grab at a stoplight, and out of my way. It fits in there perfectly, and the arm rest is so big that it never gets in the way of my elbow.

It's for programming new remote keys and to be used if the fob battery dies.
