2007 Silverado CLASSIC

Recommended Posts

In my 07 Classic, I have the GU5 Rearend, with G80 & JF7

I have dug and dug till I have wore out my fingertips. I want to find a donor vehicle to be able to take the whole rearend out of and go with 3.73 gearing.

What do I need to be looking for on the Service Parts Identification badge? What year models do I need to be looking for in Chevrolet, GMC 1500's as well as Tahoes, and Yukons that will be a direct bolt in

reconnect everything without having to modify anything? Want to keep the posi rearend as well.

05 to 07 are direct bolt in.  Only pickup trucks and not any of the Avalanches or SUVs as they are coil spring. Look for GT4 on the RPO sticker and of course G80.  Starting in 2005 the 1/2 tons all went to drum rear brakes so that's why I say 05 to 07.  Anything 04 or older would have rear discs.

Looks like I have a lot of visits to the pull a-parts with a little luck needed. Thanks

This is all from memory and a little rusty, so you might double check me, but...

I believe the 2007-13 truck axles are also useable. The Max Tow trucks (IIRC) have a 9.5" 3.73 with discs that is desirable. That said, you will need to take a look at the proportioning valve and likely swap it.

Personally, I would think rebuilding the rear end you have with new gears will be easier.

I am assuming your truck is not 4x4.

2wd, My mechanicing skills are about a mid range. Seems I always heard there were a lot of tolerances and such you have to do to get it right. Would love to do it myself if someone could explain it. Thanks

I had a shop do it. It was about $1500 total for the TruTrac differential, new rear brake pistons and shoes, and all new bearings and seals with labor. Gears only would be quite less.

You would be better off finding a shop that does that kind of work and get the new gears installed. I’m in the process of doing this to my truck, it has the same gears as your truck. My truck doesn’t have the G80, I’m going to install a truetrac in mine. It’s a complicated job for a first timer, but if your willing to try it there are a lot of how to videos on YouTube that can help you.

Yeah that is near the price I got. My thoughts are my 07 has 350,000 miles on it. So cannot see dropping 1500 on it. Found a rear end with fairly low miles for $350 hub to hub
