P0797 CEL Service Fee/Labor Charge

Recommended Posts

I have 2017 Sierra SLT with the 8 speed transmission that has 38500 on the odometer so bumper to bumper is over but the powertrain warranty is there. Last week the CEL came on after a hard shift when accelerating from a stop. Took it to the dealership where they scanned the computer and came back with a P0797 code. The paperwork states "P0797 stored in TCM as history, found update in TCM for false codes, programmed TCM and performed fast learn adapt."

To me that says the terrible 8 speed programing was the cause of my CEL coming on. My issue is that the dealership is charging $100 for the service to reprogram the computer. My service advisor stated that GM does not consider that work to be part of the powertrain warranty. I expressed how I think that is a little BS to charge a customer for something the GM should be covering under warranty.

Am I wrong and overreacting on thi or should GM have picked up the bill?

If GM doesn't cover it, the dealer can't do it for free. Powertrain coverage is meant for mechanical failures, clutches. pumps, leaks, pistons. bearings, etc. Programming is not covered.

You're not wrong in my opinion. In fact GM should be covering the cost to replace these junk 8 speed transmissions with the 10 speed.. hell I'd even trade for the 6 speed.

We have them good money for these trucks and they give us something that doesn't work correctly right from the showroom floor.

Really that's criminal.
