New Engines don’t like to be tuned!

Well, I’ve got approx 38k miles on my 2018 GMC 6.2, it’s been an excellent truck, maintained with only Amsoil products. I was asked why I’ve not looked into the new models, I replied “not tunable and I’m very happy with my 18 6.2”. Then just the other day, I saw this 2020 up in flames, later was informed that this happens often with the new motors as it had its computer tampered with and had additional performance added, that’s all I know, that’s all I needed to hear.

That’s a scary thought, felt bad for the owner as I past them up, the were about 300’ away from their truck and WOW, definitely felt the heat as I passed the burning truck two lanes away.

When the T1's showed up I looked.....for about a second then ignored them. WHOA, UGLY. A few months later I looked again close enough to sit in one. First RCLB WT1 I'd seen. Nothing about the T1 interest me. That seat came from a kindergarten class room. Then I found out they could not be tuned and I got out the shovel and buried that memory. If there is a new truck in my future, and that isn't likely, it's going to be a Dodge.

Two questions... First, who told you a tune that changes the computer settings causes these things to spontaneously combust? Was it a sales guy? Tons of late model GM performance cars (and tuned trucks) running around not catching on fire. I would say amsoil products have a better chance of causing a fire than a tune...

Second, how do you know that was the case of what caused that trucks fire? You drove by on the highway, did you circle up, track down the owner and find out later after a thorough investigation it was the tune and not a bad wiring job from lights or some type of accidental broken/cracked fuel line?

The engines will eventually be able to be tuned, manufacturers are making it harder but at some point it will be cracked. You can't blame them though as that messes with their warranty costs for people that mess with it, screw it up then try and claim it to be covered by the manufacturer. I would like them all to be able to be tuned but easily tracked so people that do can't claim repairs, got to pay to play, I don't want to pay for others mess ups.

I’m looking at keeping my truck, upgrade and update as needed, super reliable as it’s been very well maintained. It’s all about keeping up with da maintenance and occasionally being proactive [emoji6]. I was once asked what I thought about the new trucks, I said “only truck I can comment on will be mine, and I’m loving it!”

I’m guessing I’ll be in some performance 4x4 SUV by the time I’m ready for something new as trucks are becoming more and more girly with all those epa restrictions and you think the start stop is annoying now? Well, wait another 10 years and then you’ll have even more to endure and I’m not talking the new socialist/democrat party [emoji19]

Every new truck I bought I tuned. The 2014 truck got tuned. I’m glad I’m retired and don’t need to buy new anymore. The junk that’s on these new trucks would drive me crazy. If I ever have to replace my current one do to a wreck. I would be a clean old one.

Yep!

I started to worry recently about Pepper. She's running way to good and Dad told me as a child that they run the best just before they blow.  If it's true look to the eastern sky soon.

I’ll leave it up to you to figure out how I’ve obtained this information, maybe insurance, maybe fire department but I did hear it from an investigator that informed me that this isn’t the first time this has happened as it’s apparently happening from mods. If the information I received on the cause was wrong, still doesn’t change the fact that attempts to tune these new trucks is futile and will only either damage (hence the pics) or alert the dealership on your next service.

Personally, I’d rather own a vehicle that’s not limiting owners from tuning but it’s the new norm.

I really like those Ford Raptors, tried to get my 15 year old daughter to want one for her first car, she said NO, I said it’ll have a kick ass stereo and she said maybe. Woohoo I’m halfway there lol
