Powertrain Out-of-Warranty Inquiry

Does GM ever meet you in the middle when a claim is made for something right outside of the warranty period? My torque converter is quickly on the outs and I am at 72k, warranty ran out at 65k. Regardless, the truck does not pull anything and at most has hauled a lawn tractor in the bed. I dont want to hee-haw around with them, even though there are plenty of claims with faulty powertrain components, if it's doing nothing more than getting me upset. There is no way it should have failed already. Is it worth asking GM to look at it? Thanks.

Great responses so far! Ask your service manager!   I've had good luck in such situations, however. your just out of warranty argument is quite weak.   I would be more inclined to appeal to them on more compassionate grounds.   They may give you a good deal to keep you as a loyal customer or to attract you as a future customer.

I appreciate the replies though being 7k over a warranty period in my opinion is not weak. That argument to me is the same as saying that a failure of a torque converter at 72k is justifiable, even when service is recommended at 100k. I am one of far to many dealing with this issue, and I am not certain I would buy another GM given their lack support for their faulty powertrain. There was a reason they lowered the powertrain mileage warranty from 100k to 65k, this is it. Pay half to keep me as a loyal customer, I'm sorry, thats a half-ditched effort for someone who is being labeled as a valuable customer. Pay half because it is a wide spread problem. And yes, I know, buyer beware. I read that as buyer buys elsewhere. None-the-less, I do appreciate the replies, it helped the decision making process.

6-speed or 8-speed? If it is the 8-speed a fluid exchange may help as the factory fill fluid is hydroscopic and slowly absorbs water which will cause torque converter issues.

Did you know the warranty when you bought it? Did you have the chance to extend such warranty when you bought it?

As much as it sucks to be in your position right now, you’re not in the right here.

If you can get documentation that this is a frequent problem that can’t hurt.

If you’re enjoying your truck, check your odometer mileage when purchased, may have had a couple thousand on it already, fix it and try to get a good deal either through the dealership or independent shop, whichever makes you happier. If not, sell it or just trade it in!

Currently, GM (as others) is in a massive lawsuit with consumers for their knowingly selling vehicles with faulty transmissions. As of today, each and every manufacturer out there has been pushed to the outer limits by the EPA and trying to out do each other, no guarantee any manufacturer will be problem free, those old days are gone as we now live in a disposable world.

 

If you’ve got geico or another insurance, they may have an added protection plan available that would 100% cover it.

 

There are a couple good aftermarket companies out there that could help with breakdowns, your service department would know their names.

 

A buddy of mine bought a new Raptor last year, been in the shop 6 times for the same over heating issues and seal issues in door when it rains. He paid $80 plus custom work to it. Now a days, new is a crap shoot, may be better off just fixing it and keeping it as you know your truck. Just remember, ALL the manufacturers are concentrated on profits over quality, all of them!

Its going to be my only stop at the dealer. If it does not help I'll be replacing the trans and tc elsewhere. The truck is in great shape otherwise, I take good care of it.

The powertrain has been, let's say, not the greatest IMO since buying. Driving down the highway and the shift sounds like someone ran into me. Or the mornings when I put it in reverse and it jolts for a brief second while parked in the garage. Then the constant sound of it searching for gears, or a terrible shake while driving. And yes, I had it at the dealer PRIOR to 65k and they blew it off as an out of round tire. I really don't want GM touching the truck other than a fluid change, and I prefer to not install another GM trans/tc that will certainly fail down the road based on my observations as well as many thousands of other peoples. Oddly, my other vehicle has been driven hard, somehow, zero issues (knock on wood)

If you're basing your reason for wanting compensation on the idea that 72k is close to 65k then you give them a clean reason to deny your request for a reduced price.  A manufacturer can't deny an eligible warranty claim a mile before it expires but they are not obligated to honor a claim a mile after it expires.  Appeal to their goodwill and make the connection to the potential misdiagnosis of a poor tire prior to your warranty expiry.  Ask them to meet you half way on the price.  They will say either yes, no or make a counter offer.
