DANGER/Adaptive Cruise Control Malfunction

We have 2 Rav4s with ACC and it works great in those.  Reading about the GM version makes me kinda glad I don't have it in my Silverado.

Don't misunderstand, it's still 100x better having it than not. On a scale of 1-10, the Outback was probably an 8-9. This is probably a 6-7. I wish supercruise had been a year earlier in these.

Anyway, that is if I can ever get mine fixed......

What happened was there were 3 lanes of traffic heading east . The left lane had continuous traffic , I was in the middle lane and there were trucks in the right lane. A truck in the right lane came into the middle lane just in front of me to pass a slower truck. So the distance between my truck and his was very short. The adaptive cruise kept me at the same speed and didn’t slow me down then it shut off.  I took over from there, I was not on the phone or otherwise distracted . It was a very short distance and I was basically sandwiched  between the two lanes. I’m amazed at how many people responded trying to give a description of what happened when they weren’t even in the truck when this happened .

I use the adaptive cruise most of the time.

There are some traffic situations that I prefer regular cruise.

Fortunately, on these trucks you can switch between the two versions anytime -- some vehicles only have one or the other.

Just like it has been in the days before ACC there are also some traffic situations that regular cruise isn't suitable either.

Fortunately, manual is still available.....

I find that when driving into a setting/rising sun the camera gets blinded and will disable the adaptive cruise.

Only time I've had ACC aggressively brake and warn was when another vehicle cut into my lane way way to close to my bumper.

I guess it would likely do the same if the truck was driven into another lane to close behind a vehicle already in that lane. I don't plan to test it.

And GM is pushing Super Cruise? If they cannot even get that fixed, then I don't think I'd want that. The system malfunctioned, why is that so hard to understand? That's a safety issue here.

One thing I learned when I went from my 20' AT4 to my 21' is there's a lot of variation in how well these systems work truck to truck as well.   For example the auto high beams worked horribly on my 20' to the point I never used them after the first week, but work great on my 21'.   On my 20' in rain I'd frequently get the radar collision warning at stop lights, as if you were parking and going to hit something, has never happened in my 21'.   The adaptive cruise/lane detection is much better in my 21' than it was in my 20', my 21' has less issues with low sun/rain conditions.  On the other hand the traction control worked much better on wet roads on my 20'.

That said, I don't like using the adaptive cruise for the exact reason the OP listed in any sort of traffic, on roads with little to no traffic it's fine, and I'd never rely on it, especially for playing the game of coming to a complete stop.  It does not do a good job of keeping track of traffic unless it's in the lane ahead of you, on a straight road, in perfect conditions.  It also struggles to find the lane on worn roads, and if it can't find the lane it will shut adaptive cruise off.  I've also noticed that if someone cuts right in front of you, which happens all the time here, it tends to confuse the system.   The way idiots drive here in PA, they consider 2 car lengths more than enough room at 70 mph, these idiots think tailgating is a sport, so even on the shortest setting there's always someone speeding up and pulling in front of you (maybe this is why most of them drive in the left lane blocking traffic!).   Unless it's raining, the only place i've lived where people are more scared of wet roads in Vegas, and it rains more here than portland.

Honestly I'm not very impressed with the collision alert system either.  I've had it threaten to lock the brakes up in situations that did not require it.   A couple times I've had it freak out on an empty road when there was a black repair patch going across a light colored concrete road.  It also freaks out if you are coming to a corner that doesn't require stopping and there's a car or person walking, for example driving through a park with a corner and walking path.  It can't figure out the road curves and freaks out.  I'm significantly more concerned the system is going to create an accident locking the brakes up when there's no need (and getting rammed from behind by the tailgaters) than it actually going to save me from an issue in front of me.

I have a 2020 Silverado High Country, and I use Adaptive Cruise all the time and Love it!!!  BUT!!!

It is like all technology, it has its limitations. I have had mine disable in direct sunlight and pouring rain.

the worst condition is nearing  a red light in a 4 lane where the car in front of you moves over to the other lane.

even if there is a car in front of where that one was, the truck guns the accelerator to regain the cruising speed, right toward another car or an empty lane with a red light. Give me a software update so the Adaptive Cruise Camera can recognize red lights and stop signs! JK

all that said, I will continue to use the Adaptive Cruise. It works most of the time. the limitations are in the single camera and the software.

i have had this happen twice to me only i was in traffic on interstate at 75 mph not closing on anyone just got the seat vibration message stating adaptive cruise control temporally unavailable.    Another time driving on interstate again highway speed no cars close and adaptive cruise temp unavailable with entire seat vibration.   Seems odd

Not familiar with GMs version of the adaptive CC, but my wife's 4Runner has it and I hate it.  If the front camera (or whatever it is that detects the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you) is dirty, blocked, or obstructed another way, it will not allow the cruise control to be turned on and will give you a message on the DIC saying that the camera is dirty and needs to be cleaned or cleared and CC is unavailable.

*Allegedly*.  You weren't there, and neither were we.

When the adaptive on these trucks becomes unavailable if the camera unable to 'see', the system can easily be switched to regular cruise using the cruise control buttons.

Are you guys nuts. I was able to avoid the truck because I was paying attention. It wasn’t a panic situation , but it was a close call. The adaptive cruise is supposed to be a safety feature . Right now mine is not . They have all these technology features so as to make the vehicle safer to drive. I wanted to alert others of a potential serious issue with regard to this matter, and see if anyone else has had any problems. Try to avoid speculating as to what I did or didn’t do because you weren’t in the truck with me when this happened and more then likely your getting it wrong .

I’m surprised you had to slam on your brakes. In my wife’s Camry even in the closest setting you’re pretty far away when it starts to slow down. That being said yours didn’t but I’m surprised you didn’t pick up in that sooner so you weren’t slamming on the brakes. Sounds like your truck needs some work though.

I also had a similar issue.  Front brake assist or collision avoidance failed.  Vibration and red warning after fender bender at front passenger.   $6300 damage and GM denied my claim.   GM isn't standing behind their safety systems on a $65,000 truck
