Gas prices vs potential AFM issues

Recommended Posts

Howdy folks,

I've a 2018 low mileage 5.3 and have used a range device that shuts off afm and start/stop since ~500 miles (edit to add, I had planned on taking it out for highway mileage and being active about not using it at times but truth is I've just left it in all this time) . Currently gas prices are sky rocketing to the point I wonder if financially I'd be better off potentially risking lifters later to save gas money now and yanking the device?... Brain hurt... Too much math...

What do you hopefully more edjumacated people think bout it?

Tia,

If it's going to fail it's going to fail. It doesn't matter what device were programming is done to the engine. Guys who have done programming still have had failures. Enjoy what you have and make the best of it.

Another point.......you always hear about the few who've had lifter failures.

You never hear about the tens of thousands who've had no issues at all.

Statistically, you're highly unlikely to have a lifter failure.

Just my 3 cents (inflation)  😉

I personally would continue with the AFM delete. I don't think your gas mileage would improve that much. I think using it increases the chance that the mechanical "catches" built into the lifter will scare the lifter causing lifter failure. With the Range device, that part is eliminated. But..people do what they want to do, so boils down to your choice.

I just drive around in L7 (have an 8 speed) around town because I dislike the constant V4 / V8 switching. I always leave AFM enabled on highway trips.

Had a Range device but disliked the GMC app always complaining it couldn't get data from my truck because a device was plugged into ODBII port.

Also replaced stock muffler with a Magnaflow 12909 along with a AFE intake. Left the resonator after the muffler and do not experience annoying helicopter noise when in V4. I can tell its in v4 by the noise now when low speed driving but on highway its unnoticeable. Still nice and quiet on highway until above 50% throttle input then it sounds like a proper v8. Flow through muffler design and no annoying flapper squeak when cold.

FYI - No noticeable mpg improvement with muffler and Cold Air Intake but its sounds a hell Ofa lot better. Supposed to give a few more HP and TQ as well.

Hey everyone, I have a 2014 Silverado with 5.3. I have been experiencing a tick or tap when the vehicle  reaches around 1500 RPM and above.. This has been going on for some time now.. The truck runs absolutely perfect, gas mileage is good, Oil pressure is good, no misfires or codes. The sound seems to be coming from the driver side valve pan area. Any thoughts?

Fwiw, I'd highly suggest starting a seperate thread to ask that question. Your audience is limited inside this thread and the answers will likely be biased towards afm related issues.

Also, thanks everyone for the feedback!

The AFM system in your truck is very reliable and as long you run the correct oil and change it sooner than the OLM, you can enjoy its benefits without fear of failure.

Vacuum pump? Have you replaced it, or had the update done?

I have a Loaded 2018 LT Crew cab with only 42253 miles on it.  My opinion is gas regardless of what is happening now was going up.  In Canada the government is basically using gas taxes do drive people to the Electric market.

So I ordered a Refresh 3.0 DURAMAX RST Crew Cab even before current world events.
