New to the site, thanks for having me. I have a 2013 Silverado 5.3 with the tow package. It’s has a 6900lb towing capacity from what the manufacturer says. I’m in the market for a camper but I’m confused on what I can safely tow. Any help would be great.

I know he has a 5.3 with the HD cooling and 3.08 gears.

Try to buy something in the 4000 pound range because by the time it's loaded up you'll be hitting around 6K pounds.  These trucks run out of payload usually before running up against their tow rating.

Your same truck with 3.42 gears can pull 9600 pounds.

Might sound strange, but I would shop for trailers by the GVWR of the trailer.  Knowing you are at 6900lbs max towing capacity, this assumes you have 3.08 gears and it should have heavy cooling aka aux trans cooler because its a 5.3 with 6 speed.

I'd look for trailers that are under 7000lbs GVWR, maybe even 6500lbs or less.  Also something to keep in mind, payload.  Take a look at the tire load label in your door jamb.  It should show you the maximum cargo capacity for the truck.  This figure is for both people and cargo.

Tongue weight should be at 10% of the trailer's weight.  This is weight that also needs to be factored in off of that payload #.  So lets say your payload is 1600lbs.  Your trailer weighs in at 6000lbs loaded up.  10% of that is 600lbs, subtract from the truck's payload rating, that leaves you 1000lbs for you, any family members and pets, and extra gear to go in the truck.

Go to your local GM dealer with your VIN. He'll give you a print out of the build sheet (you'll be able to decode the Reg. Pro. Opt. (RPOs) and know exactly how your truck is equipped; well almost exactly; and if you ask all the towing info you could want on your truck.
