Blackout badges

Recommended Posts

Considering replacing chrome badges with black ones. Would like to hear from folks where they bought theirs and how have they held up to the elements. I see them on GM Accessories and e-Bay but the prices are like 3 to 4 times higher at GM Accessories. I want quality not something that's going to fade or peel so don't mind the cost. Suggestions and experience appreciated., post pics if you got them! This is for a 22 RST Z71.

Get the gm parts. I'm trying to finish update my build post with part numbers. The eBay ones are mostly trash. It's important to filter for US only if your search for aftermarket ones. I'd just search the gm part numbers and search ebay or amazon buy them

Awesome, thanks Dan! Appreciate the shots, did the "Silverado" come with the template to keep the lettering's spaced properly. Did you go with GM accessories to order? Checked out your build...good stuff man.

Yes it came with a carboard template. Basically with all the emblems I surrounded the original ones with blue painters tape to mark their positions. Use 50 lb fishing wire (might have been ok with 20 lb) to cut through the existing tape to remove the original ones. Work with a heat gun/orange plastic autobody blade/and my fingers to rub off all the old tape from the body. Finish with a few cycles of goo gone/plastic blade and microfiber to remove all the left over residue. Clean really well and finish with alcohol.

With the silverado template I had to cut out a few windows of the carboard so I could see the masking tape behind it and put them on correctly.

I actually have one extra silverado one if you are interested. $25 bucks shipped. If interested PM me. The caveat would be you need to find someone with an RST badge.

For the most part, the OEM emblems are made in China already. Since there are no copyright laws in China, they sell them without the OEM packaging for much cheaper. The current gen emblems are all plastic so there isn't much difference between OEM and aftermarket. I had red outline 6.2L emblems on my hood for a year until I removed them to mix it up with a red stripe and black 6.2L emblems. I also bought redline Silverado and Custom emblems and they appear identical to the chrome ones already on the truck. The issue is if you get painted emblems or ones with enamel inlays. I ran into issues with HEMI emblems on my 05 Dodge Magnum R/T and fading.

I beg to differ, I bought a set of badges that advertised as "OEM". Didn't realize it was from China until I saw the tracking number. They showed up and were absolute garbage quality. The Z71 badge had little rigidity and the rest of the kit was just bare black plastic that I know would become sun faded in little more than a few weeks. All I'm saying is you have to be cautious when buying aftermarket.

Are the Z71 badge gloss black or matte black, hard to decipher from the photo even on GM accessories? Also are the set you have the Silverado and the RST badge are they gloss or matte?

Hey Dan, does your truck have the Z71 emblem on the grille?  I've looked at google images and only see the grille emblem on Trail Boss version only. Wonder if that can be installed on RST Z71..

No and there is no place to even attempt to put it. I was probably going to cut the little prongs off and throw some 3m tape on it and use it as an interior or underhood emblem somewhere.

I bought mine from a couple different Amazon links.

I will say though, if the seller sends it to you folded, it will be a pain in the ass to line up correctly. When I bought my first pair of "SILVERADO" to replace the chrome fender ones, I screwed up on the first one, but the second one came out looking good. That seller sent it in a flat package where they did NOT fold it.

I should've bought it again but my dumb ass went and bought it from another seller to reattempt the first side and it came folded. That was a pain to line up correctly. Had to bust out the painters tape and lay down a "+" cuz it would've gone on misaligned (the foam template came bent and folded).

I just bought a white frost 2019 Sierra Denali and want to blackout all the chrome on it. Anyone have experience doing this? Want to do all the badges, grill, door handles etc. I’m thinking I will take the chrome grill and lower insert around the tow hooks out and acid wash them to remove the chrome and get back to the ABS plastic and have them painted, but didn’t know if there was an option that was better? Here’s a couple of the pictures as is now. I’ve ordered black 22” rims and the leveling kit, but once those are on I want to get the rest of it blacked out. Thanks

Ok so I got a white truck, and like most Ive been looking at blacking out the emblems. Ive thought of plasti dipping it, Ive thought about spray painting it, and Ive thought of vinyl wrapping it. I would like to to be completly black with no chrome. Painting / plasti dipping it has turned me off because Im afraid of it eventually chipping. Another thing I will probably do, is paint the other badges or just replace them with black as well.

My question to those that have done this. What has worked the best for you? Did you black out the chrome part too? How has the paint / plasti dip held up, those who did vinyl hows it going?

Hello all! I have a midnight edition z71 (see sig)and I was thinking about blacking out the red 'Z' in Z71 on my doors and my front grill. what would be the safest and easiest way to do that? My three thoughts are taping off and using plasti dip OR getting some touch up paint and just getting little brush and painting that way OR even better, are their any after market stickers (that i haven't been able to find yet) that i can just put over the red? Although I like the de badge look, I saw one with a blacked out Z and thought it looked even better. Any help would be appreciated!

(Oh and side question... I never thought of an oil filter as a part that would increase performance, but I was curious if I have been thinking wrong? I always get a mobile 1 filter anyway)

      Thanks in advance!
