What Rear-end do I have?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 3500 HD with 8.1 ltr gas engine. I need help identifying my rear-end.  It looks almost exactly like a dana 80. Axle ends are different.  I think it's a corporate, not sure though.  Rpo codes don't help.

Yes, it should be a GM 14 Bolt with an 11.5 ring gear. 14 bolts on the cover and the ring gear, and the pinion is on a removable support.

There is a "broadcast code" on the right axle tube of a GM 14 Bolt that has specific information for your rear axle.

You might look for "The 14 Bolt Bible" pdf online for further information. Pirate 4x4 has great information of several rear axles.

It's a 10 bolt just like a dana 80. I don't know if it matters but it's a cab and chassis

Is this a 400 series truck?  I-beam front axle, 1988-98 cab?  If so, yes, those did use a Dana 80.

That is a Dana 80.  The 1991-2001 3500HD cab and chassis was a medium duty truck, the pickups didn't use the Dana 80 rear axle.  The shafts and hubs are unique to these trucks, they are a GM design.  Ford and Ram Dana 80's use different shafts and hubs.
