OnTheReel Posted March 22 Posted March 22 I’ve been lambasted in the past for doing early oil changes on new vehicles. Typically people will say that the surface finishes, tolerances or clearances on a modern engine are better and this isn’t necessary. So imagine my surprise when seeing late model BMWs calling for a 1200 mile oil change and differential service. It was like a religious experience! Paul on the road to Damascus. I guess these world class performance cars must have terrible surface finishes and/or sloppy tolerances compared to my Ram? 1 1

The information posted for Raven wherein I showed the results from a like motor from it's first change stuck a pin in that idea. Repost below. I think I truncated the graph before limiting the upper limit to 5 ppm in scale. This is PPM per One Thousand Miles. So if this fella would have run the book 7,500 miles iron would have been roughly 104 ppm! Even at 10K it would have been nearly 30 ppm. Once break-in was over it settled nicely into 7 to 8 ppm per 7,500 OCI. Allot of people parrot what they hear and not what they TEST. Break-in is still relevant. 1 1

Nice chart there, illustrates things perfectly. People parrot what they want to believe regardless. Most guys don’t want to be bothered with an early oil change, so the easy solution is to find someone to tell you it isn’t needed. Usually the owners manual is the someone. 2
