Whistling noise

Alright, I finally got sick of taking my truck to the dealer for the whistling noise at freeway speeds and tried to find it myself.  Dealer couldn't reproduce, which is surprising when the odometer shows that it wasn't driven more than a mile which means they never even took it on the freeway.  Well, to make a long story short, I took a drive w/ my dad and the noise is coming from the front door and he could get his finger between the weathersripping and the door skin.  So, when I got home I climbed into the bed of the truck to take a peek at the doors and look closely.  The passenger door sticks out on top while the drivers side is nice and tight.  How would I go about fixing this?  One of the guys at work said he had a van like that and he took a 2x4 and used to bend the top of the door back into position.  I don't want to fix it myself and I was thinking of putting some foam insulation in it, but why did I pay all that money for a truck when it's mussed from the start.  I could take it back to the dealer and point it out to them, but they aren't the greatest.  I may try another dealer.  I just thought I'd let eveyone know and see if anyone else has this problem.  I'll get some pics tonight when I get home from work as long as it's not dark already, but the more I look at it the more noticeable the gap is and I wonder why I never saw it before.

Hey chevy4X4,

I think I can help. :)

There are a few things you can check here.

1. Check the door hinges; take measurements from the good door (forget which one is the good one) and compare them with the bad door. See if the measurements are the same on each door.

2. Not sure about this one on the new trucks. On mine there is an adjustment that can be made on the stud (?) where the door latch catches and keeps the door shut. You may want to take measurements on that as well. That stud may need to be adjusted so the door shuts tighter. Should need a large hex to turn that stud.

Hope this isn't too confusing. I'm not too good at explaining things like that  :D

Let me know how things work out.

I'll have to take a peek at that tonight.  Every time I took it in they always messed w/ the ext cab door hinge and just made it worse.  I did have the door off the truck before because it was in an accident and they had to put a new skin on it so maybe they never lined it up correctly which I wouldn't put past them becuase they do everything else wrong.

yeah I know, I find all these problems w/ there service and body shop.  For sales they can't be beat though.  I'm going to try a different dealer for any other problems I have and I've got to send GM a letter about the service that I encountered at that particular dealership.  I had them repaint the side of my truck a few months back because I think that the paint job they did warped, but they assured me that it did not and I must have driven through something, despite the fact that it warped only on the side they painted.  Well, they were supposed to paint the passenger door, ext cab door and passenger bed side.  Well, when I got the truck back they had forgotten to put on the 4x4 sticker, there was buffing compound embedded into my spray on bedliner, all of the black trim was now discolored, buffing compound in ever crevice on the truck, red paint on my tires, and the truck was filthy.  Those were my first complaints, but now I've figured out that they never actually painted the bedise, which I suspected at first but now have proven.  Because, they would have to remove my fender flare and in mine I have one plastic screw that's different and it was in the exact same spot, that tipped me off.  Also, if you have flares you know that they will get stuff behind them, raod debris.  Well, when I got the truck back all 4 flares were dirty behind them, when if  that one was off it should have been sparkling.  I complained to the body shop manager who didn't take me seriously and I ended up bringing the truck back twice to get cleaned and that 2nd time it still wasn't all that clean.  So I complained to the manager of the place who said that I should bring it in again and assured me that they can't possibly get it as clean as I would like it to be.  So, I said, well what about refunding some of the money that I spent on this since I didn't think the paint was warped through any fault of my own, the truck was in the shop 2 days longer than they said, and I had to waste countless hours of my time cleaning it myself and taking it in extra times, not to mention white stuff that's permanently stuck to the bed.  And his response, "we don't do that."  So, I said a few words and left.  I am less than satisfied w/ there service, negligence, and just shotty work attitude.

:)    And to make matters worse:     :D

YOU are the one who gets the reputation of being a whiney-assed, nit-pickin, unsatisfiable customer.

Shame you have to be this way to get your vehicle fixed properly!

Suggestion:  Since your vehicle was involved in an accident, it's not a manufacturer prob...it's a body shop/repair prob.  Approach it this way.  Take the vehicle back to the body shop that did the work.  If it happens to be this dealer...so be it..you are stuck with their shoddy work, but they are stuck with your whiney-butt until it's right...get it?   Don't take it to another dealer and expect them to be nice and correct the 'other' dealers shoddy body work...that doesn't happen until you have sued & won.

Just be SUUUPERRRRR Nice to the dealer, but be unrelenting in your non-acceptance of shoddy work.  "Gee I'm sorry to be a pain about this, but ever since you removed & reinstalled my door..it has an air whistle to it."

I am an expert at being apain in the butt about things like this...I learned this trick while I wore out Chrysler over my 1999 Ram that pinged so bad you couldn't drive it.

Im pretty sure they cant drive your truck on the freeway.  I had a problem where the truck was running rough at 35-45 mph.  The shop foreman wanted to take it on the expressway but said he couldnt do that.  I was with him and told him to.  We found a stretch of road without stop lights and he was able to see what i was talking about

It is the dealer body shop that did the work and right now I am just fed up w/ dealing w/ the guy.  I can talk to the body shop guy or the manager and neither of them will listen to my complaints.  I've been there at least 4 times about it and called them many more.  Each time it was the same result. I've pretty much given up on them for doing repairs for anything and reported it to my insurance company and the one of the other driver about the work they do since they were a preffered dealer for them before.  I mean do I really want a one year old 25,000 dollar truck w/ all sorts of problems because they don't take care of them correctly.

Just a note about your original post and the use of a 2x4 to adjust your door. At the assembly plant, that is basically what they do to adjust doors on vehicles as they are built. The "door fitter" will actually bend the door header to get a good fit of the door. You can move the striker and hinges all you want but if the door doesn't have the right curvature, it will never fit and seal correctly.  :)

I think that I'll give them one last attempt and clearly spell out every problem and what I expect.  If need be I'll hold the guys hand while he works on the truck because the whole 36,000 mile warranty is worthless because they don't do the work.  I'm going to have to go tomorrow after work since I have a welding class tonight, if they can't do it or I have problems I'm going to try another dealership down the street.  I mean, they do get paid for warranty work right?  So, why not do a quality job?
