Z71 or not?

Does the VIN give you a clue as to whether a truck left the factory as a Z71 or if someone has made one out of a 4x4? Other than a skid plate and shocks, are there other clues?

Don't have a stiker on the side? Than I don't think it is z71. Vin number And RPO codes will tell you pretty much everything. In the glovebox, codes like G80, Z71, Z82, M30. Give you a lot info if it is Z71.

Hope that helped.

What is an RPO code?

(...and yes, it says: "Z71" on each side of the box, but you can buy those decals pretty cheap on eBay .)

I was just wondering if there was a definitive way to know if someone had added the decals to my truck. I love it either way!

Look in the glovebox. There is a sticker that lists all the 3 letter RPO codes. Z71 should be one of them. If not you are driving a poser truck

The VIN itself doesn't tell, but a dealer can pull up the trucks RPO codes with the VIN.

On my 94' there is a sticker inside the glove box. It has a list of alphanumerics. These alphanumerics are called RPO codes. Each code is an option installed by GM at the factory, and in many cases it is how certain cars are given there names.

In the 60s GM needed a name for their new high performance Camaro. The RPO code for the new package was "Z28"....

If your truck is a Z71, then Z71 should appear on the sticker....not to mention two differentials and autotrack 4WD

No dude,

Autotrac wasn't available in trucks until 99 and even then its not required for Z-71.

2 differentials?? That just means it is a 4x4 :smash:

lol...yea...sorry about that..wasn't really sure what year autotrack came around. In the original post, he didn't mention what year it was too.

Autotrack isn't a Z71 requirement??

No you can get pretty stripped down Z-71s from 99-02 at least. I think they have to be LS, but some are the bare minimum LS.

It is a poser!

Oh well, it’s a real Chevy. That’s the important thing. It’s also a real Silverado. I guess I’m just old school, but “stripped down” and “Silverado” shouldn’t even be used in the same sentence.

FYI: My truck is a 1998 std. cab, swb with leather and all the goodies.

Z71 or not, I still love her!
