dmax and the engine oil meter.

well i usually change the oil every 5 thousand in my powerstroke but when i test drove the dmax the other day i noticed it had a engine oil meter. how well does this work and is it reliable?

I desregard the Engine Oil Life Meter completely. It is calculated on engine RPM's and temperature, I think. RPM's for sure. It does not actually measure viscosity dirt, or the burn of the oil. This is why I change it every 6000 miles, and the Oil Life Meter usually is still around 50%. On my gas, I changed it every 3000 miles. If you change every 3000 miles with a diesel, you are just throwing your money away. It was probably overkill on 3k with the gas. Even at 6k the oil runs out gold and smooth on the DMax.

gold? man my cummins abd powerstroke were all black when i pulled the oil out. does the dmax really run that clean?

I was exagerating a little, but yes. My buddy has an 03 cummins and it looks like tar after 6000 miles. These DMaxes have to be worked to even open the thermostat up. Quiet and clean, they are. Let me ask you this. Do you ever see a DMax smoke? You can follow a cummins or a stroker around town and if they get after it a little bit, you can see that smoke plume in their wake.

i have seen 2 smoke. blue smoke at that. but if they run cleaner thats great.

Of course its reliable. Do you think GM would invest a ton of money to design a system to monitor the oil in a very expensive vehicle if it wasn't trustworthy?

Tha last thing GM wants to do is to is ruin the engine your car. Do you think anybody would buy another GM product if the engine was toast at 50K miles because you used the OLM?

well how close is it to common belief that you change every 5k? does it say that its time to change or does it say that you still have time?

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking.

If you're asking if at 5K miles will the OLM say you need to change the oil or will it be ok to run longer,thats next to impossible to answer.

The OLM uses miles,RPMs,temps and more to monitor the oil in your engine. Its not a timer set at 5K,7K or 10K miles. If you really run your truck hard it may come on before 3K. If you do nothing but highway miles in a moderate climate it will come on at a higher mileage.

Its a sophisticated system that nobody should be afraid to use.

What does OLM stand for? The only thing I can think of is Oil Life Meter? My truck has this oil percentage on my steering wheel controls. is that what it is? sorry , i just dont know all the terms...still learning..i learn something new from here everyday.

Yes, OLM is the oil life meter witch is the same as the oil life percentage on the DIC display in the gauge cluster.

going off topic here. but i noticed that the block heated was on option. did you have to order your dmax with it of do most dealerships get a dmax with it anyway?

I'd say it depends on locale. I don't think you'll find many block heaters in Florida. Here in Washington almost every D-max comes with the heater. Even my 8.1 has a block heater.

I'm in WI and mine came with it (altho never have used it) as well as the "winter cover". That I do use to help it warm up faster.

i have a chip in my psd and it smoke when you run it hard. but the dmaxes i was were idling at the light. they were puffing blue smoke and it was a touch worse when it turned green. who knows about em though. could have been a lemon or just neglect or otherwise. who knows
