Annoying loud signal click on Canyon

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine just bought a new GMC Canyon, loves everything about it except for the annoyingly LOUD turn signal click, is there anything he can do to rectify that?

Thanks! :withstupid:

I have a Colorado (same as a Canyon) and it annoys me too. Nothing you can do about it. When I first got my Colorado I thought, "I'll just find that flasher and wrap some foam insulation around it." I haven't looked yet, but I've been told the turn signal click sound is actually generated by the cluster. Not much chance of wrapping that in foam.

Anyway, I keep meaning to look deeper into this, if for no other reason than my own sanity.

p.s. Okay, I just went and looked at the schematics. Looks like I was told correctly. The turn signal sound is generated in the cluster. I don't see any way to change the level of sound it makes. Better tell him to get used to it.

GM-Tech,

My husband poked around under the dash thinking also perhaps that he could put foam or some other sound deadener if it was a mechanical flasher. Upon inspection he surmised the sound was probably just one of many produced and "played" over perhaps a small speaker? If this is what you mean by generated by the cluster then that makes total sense.

If, however, the noise is a separate stand alone issue, and we suppose since you looked at the schematics this is not the case; we hoped a single wire could be cut and capped eliminating this sound. That does not appear to be the case, and thank you much for the quick follow up, but if this triggers any additional thoughts on your part I would be interested in hearing it.

If this an electronically generated sound, would anyone have a suggestion for how to properly frame a complaint to GM in order to generate a solution that would maybe involve flashing/reprogramming some computer component in this line of vehicles?

In the meantime I'll just get him some good CD's and tell him to crank that baby up. :withstupid:

The schematic shows what looks like a small speaker on two wires within the cluster, but the drawings are often simplified so you have an idea of what's going on and not a true representation on how the speaker actually exists within the cluster.

I suspect it's the type of speaker that is soldered directly into a printed circuit board and there are no wires to cut. If you wanted it silenced that seriously and wanted to take the cluster apart, I guess if you find the speaker you could put something over it to deaden the sound rather than unsoldering it and having no sound at all.

Personally, it doesn't bother me enough to go through all that and risk damaging the cluster.
