I ran across this today and the Dakota and the Tacoma are rated the safest P/U's out there and the Silverado was judged as most likey to roll over of all full sized P/U's which kinda surprized me some too.

Not quite. Regarding rollover, the Ford Ranger was rated 2 stars while all other pickups (including GM) were rated 4 stars. GM pickups received 4 stars for driver and 3 stars for passenger protection in front-end crashes.

But is was the lowest crash rating of a fullsized P/U and "size" is supposed to mean safety yet the smaller models faired far better in impact tests

But in the "Real world" crashes rarely happen with a immovable block of steel and concrete. In actuality crashes most often happen between two vehicles. Who wins and is safer in a head on crash between a Toy and a full size truck, any make? I have seen a few that the small car or truck is destroyed, while the full size truck or SUV has some minor sheet metal damage. A small vehicle stops quicker in a collision due to less mass, passing more crash impact to the passengers. Full size, heavier vehicles carry their momentum over a longer period due to the increased mass, transferring less impact to the passengers. There was a report out a while ago that showed that a full size is many times safer than a small vehicle. I'll stick with what is really safe for me and my family, full size!

It's my opinion that as the vehicle ages, these numbers will reverse, as the higher advertising budget at Dodge takes its toll in terms of mechanical integrity degradation. Sure, if you hit a concrete barrier at 40 mph your air bag will still probably deploy, but you wouldn't have hit the barrier in the first place if your ball joints weren't corroded and worn out.
