Trip #4 to get the vibrating heat shield fixed

Recommended Posts

It's slowly been rattling more and more, so decided to take it back in for the 4th attempt to fix it.

Now they're saying the muffler is shot, factory defect, baffles are busted inside. They don't have it in stock, so now I have to go back again when it comes in.

In the meantime, boneheads left something loose on the exhaust, so now it is banging up and down on the frame, and major rolling sounds when I turn right.

I'm really getting fed up over this dumb rattle that should've been fixed the first time. How patient am I suppose to be before I blow???? JUST FIX IT!

I hope this is the only thing that goes wrong with this truck.

I am at a loss for words or at least nice non cuss words.

You have been extremely patient. Maybe the owner needs to get involved again. This time weeding out the moron tech's looking over your truck.

my fingers are crossed.

 You paid big money for your truck - make em' get it right if you have to go all the way to the top! My philosophy is patient escalation...by the time I get to the general manager they usually fix it right just so I'll go away and not bitch anymore.

Whenever you find where the problem is, pass along the info. I seem to have a vibe @ low speed that sounds like it might be the same thing. Haven't had the opportunity to get under the truck to look for myself though. Thanks

Had a similar problem when i had my 97. They could not pin point it so the service manager actually told me to go get louder exhaust so i would not hear it anymore. I don't use that dealership anymore!

If the dealer can't fix it go to another. If the dealer tells you to get a louder exhaust call customer assistance and complain.

I have the same problem. I just got a magnaflow muffler installed, and now I have a loud vibration(almost sounds like metal on metal) at low rpms, and it's worse when I turn right. I'm not sure what it is. Please let me know if you find something out, my truck sounds like it's about to fall apart!

Those morons didn't tighten something down because now I'm getting lot's of thumping and and cluncking, when I turn right sounds like some is rolling across the truck. (I even checked the bed to make sure nothing was rolling around)

I should have called to chew them out, I am just so sick of going there I thought I would ride this out till my muffler comes in.

Halen and Vroten this is what's taken place.

Here is what happened the first 3 trips.

1st week, less than 500 miles on her I get this vibration from the exhaust. At first it seemed to show up when I was going up a slight incline, and if I kept it at 25 mph it was constant. Sounds like sheetmetal rattling. I thought it sounded like a loose heat shield.

1st trip to dealer, they repositioned my fuel lines and said the exhaust was bottoming out against the frame.............which of course they fixed :D

The noise was still there, progressively got worse with time, taking off from a dead stop made heads turn it rattled so loud. Loud at slow constant speeds.

2nd trip to dealer, they said it's your heatshield......... :fume: told them that the first time, said they had to order dampners.

3rd trip to dealer, they put the dampners on, seemed to help, was only making noise on the inclines at low speed or when you jump on it. Started to slowly get worse.

That's when I posted this, the 4th trip.

I am patiently waiting for the new muffler, I just hope my exhaust doesn't fall off in the meantime.

I will let you guys know.

Thanks for the sympathy facn8me, you know how patient I am, my faith is starting to faulter.(still need something else for the front-end.....any ideas?)

What do you care it there problem. If the whole exhaust falls off they will have to fix it. Just document everything they do & keep the work orders.

Its too bad there are some dealers that dont give a s**t. All they want to do is sell, thats not the whole package. They have to service there customers well if they want them back. Thats what some of the domestic companies & dealers dont still understand. The big 3 have as good or better products out there but the dealers cant or wont fix them. :D

Ok, I found out what's making the noise that I'm hearing. When I had the flowmaster cut off and the magnaflow put on, the installer must have changed the angle of my tailpipes, and the tips now rattle againt the receiver hitch. It sounds bad, I'm going to try and get it fixed tomorrow.

redvett you are so right, you hit the nail on the head. Wouldn't you think after buying my '02 back, getting me into this brand new one, with a simple problem that could be fixed if they took the time to do it.

I don't know about you guys, but I've spent too much time at the dealerships. I don't know if they are advancing too fast in technology and it's just a matter of not teaching the mechanics to keep up with it. They almost need a mechanic school specific to the makes, then constant continuing education so they can fix all these vehicles they're making.

03gmc2500hd I think I would have told that service advisor where to go. Ya might as well turn the stereo up and save a few bucks.............not. I work too bloomin hard for my money that I use to pay for this expensive truck, the least they can do is stand behind their product and warranty.

Halen5150(cool name by the way) I'm glad you figured it out. When mine first started I was yanking on my tail pipe too. Hardly any play in it.

elvisdog-after what happened with my '02, the service manager won't even look at me when I go in. His sorry little butt caught some hell after he blew me off with a bad front wheel bearing and broken motor mounts.......told me "it's safe to drive lady, all the noise you hear.......it's your steering shaft....you just need a little grease in your steering shaft" He wouldn't even drive it around the dealership, I pleaded with him the truck wasn't safe, he had that ignorance about him that I, being female, didn't know what I was talking about. Dipstick won't even look at me now...............I told him what an  ^%%^&% he was and that he could have gotten me killed over his arrogant attitude. :fume: Still works me up, sorry..... :D

Very frustrated right now :D
