Saved a lot of $$

Last week my '00 Rado devleloped a bad lifter tick. This was different than the

piston slap which I've had for a while. The ticking would last for a minute or more.

Took it to the dealership and was quoted $2200 to change the lifters and cam. The

new engines require that the heads be removed to change lifters. They also recommended that before I do that to run some SeaFoam through it. I ran a third of

the can through the brake booster line then poored the rest in the oil pan and drove

about 150 miles and changed the oil. Truck runs better and the tick is gone.

SeaFoam seems to work pretty good!

If it cured it you need to re-evaluate your oil type and changing habits as it sounds like you had varnish or gum on piddle valve in lifter that your oil is not keeping in control. I have a few gas engiens with 200k on them that have never ticked in their life.

he's right. if you fixed it with sea-foam then the lifter wasn't really bad. driving style, maintenance, or oil choices were likely the cause of the problem.

I change it every 3000 miles with Castrol, never had any problems with that oil in the past. The mechanic even had the valve covers off and it was clean in there.

You need to dump the Castrol because the lifters gummed up for lack of cleaning and not wear because if it was worn out, seafoam would not have fixed it. I used to use Castrol many years ago but stopped using it sometime ago after my big air cooled engines in large yard tractors started using a lot of it and when I changed brands the problem went away. Something in the heat of a air cooled motor was breaking the oil down quickly while otherbrands did okay.

I wouldn't know what to go to after Castrol then. I've pulled apart too many motors that had Pennzoil and Q-state in them and they were tar pits.

Hey it is your nickle but if your current oil had done its job, the lifter would have never stuck plain and simple. If it stuck once it will stick again with same oil.

Not too late to switch to Mobil 1. I promise it won't cause any of the problems that you're having with your current oil.

I would suggest one other thing in this motor. The next time you change the oil, leave out a qt of oil and add a qt of Shaler's Rislone, part # 100Q. This is not a snake oil and they make no miracle claims. Plain and simple, it is a great additive for the hyd lifters. I have been selling it since the mid 70s. Back then, several Fords, Pontiacs and Buick were known for lifter tap after they reached 75K miles. We would recommend the Rislone and tell them that if this did not stop the tap, they could get their wrenches out.

You may not need it at every oil change but if the lifter stuck once or has an issue, it will likely come back.

You can check out Risone at Shaler's website. It is one of the few chemicals made to use among the many that are made to sell.

ATF does the same thing...

I substituted a quart of oil with a quart of Rislone a couple of weeks ago when the oil was changed. Lifter tick is still there. I haven’t tried seafoam through the brake booster line, but I have used it in my oil and gas. It didn’t quiet the noise any.

Like I have said before, if Rislone did not stop your lifter tick, you can get out the wrenches. Rislone is not a miracle cure and I will agree with Snoman, if you have a tick that Rislone or Seafoam cured, you have an oil issue. I use Amsoil myself but have no problem with Mobile 1 either.
