Steering Wheel Controls on Avalanche

Recommended Posts

I just finished adding Jason's audio steering wheel controls to my Avalanche and they work great. The instructions were enough to guide a rookie like me through successfully and Jason is great with personalized help. There a few minor differences from the instructions than are in the Avalance ( like the steering wheel trim snaps together rather than screws together), but all went well. Oh yea I broke a small snap lock that secures the SIR coil and had to make a trip to the dealer to buy a $1.13 clip. This is definitely a neat kit. Tom

the snap lock thing, is that the little copper reataner clip?  That was the hardest thing to get off.  When I got it off I said "I hope I don't have to reuse this."  Doh, ended up having to heat it up and re-bend it.  That little map gas torch I keep really comes in handy.  Glad to hear you're happy w/ it.

I'm going to be adding this part to the kits from now on. Instead of trying to salvage it, it'll be easier to just include it for everyones convenience.

I am glad to hear that this thing works on the Avy. This is one thing I will be getting after the holidays. Maybe by then the small clip will be in the kit.

Good job DocToss.

Good business decision Jason.

BTW what is the link to the kit.

Jason I found the link through your website. Nice truck. Now what I am wondering is, I have the graphite interior. Does this kit come for graphite or do I have to paint?

While I was waiting to get my clip, I ran out of gas using my kid's car. Seems like they drive it until one of the parents has to drive it and fills it up with gas. As to painting, the kit-to-paint kit has a dark gray trim. I waited until I removed the old trim before I painted the new trim to match. I was concerned about the painting, but the flat black upholstry and fabric paint from autozone worked great. Actually the paint job turned out to be one of the easiest and best parts. Tom

EDZ Z71 - you'll want the Paint-to-Match kit. Painting the trim piece is probably the easiest part of the install. Just make sure you prep the trim piece first. The most important part of painting it is the prep.

I just ordered a bunch of snap rings/clips to put in all the kits, so they'll be in the kits starting the first of the new year.

I've got painting instructions on my site if you need them.  But, the key is in the prepping process, the piece must be clean.

But, just clean the piece thoroughly, spray it w/ a plastics primer (2 coats preferably), let that set up for a 1/2 hour, spray it w/ a first coat of paint, let it sit for an hour or so and then a second coat.

I put my stuff under an electric heater because it helps the paint set faster.

Also, make sure you keep it in a dust and wind free area.
