How many miles on a new truck before a custom tune

Recommended Posts

Well even though I only have 1300km on the new crew cab z71, I am already looking at getting a wester's pcm. As I am in Calgary, Lyndon's shop is only a two hour drive away.

I was just curious what people recommend in terms of how many miles to have on their truck before getting the pcm tuned. I havent talked to Lyndon regarding this yet, as I wanted to hear some of your opinions first. I was kind of thinking anytime after 5000miles (7500km)

Any thoughts?

I'd wait till your warranty runs out or be willing to have the dealer reject your warranty claims if you do encounter problems, the dealers are under no obligation to honor a warranty once aftermarket modifacations have been made to the vehicle NO MATTER WHAT THOSE AFTERMARKET COMPANIES MAY SAY!!!!! I listen to a national consumer advocate program (Tom Martino/Troubleshooter) and every now and then he gets a call from a consumer whos done mods to his vehicle and the dealer won't honor the warranty.

I think it's been pretty well established here that the dealer can't see the tune unless he's looking at the fuel ratio, timing curves, etc.

More likely than not, if the tech is thinking that there's a computer problem, he's just going to flash it to the latest and greatest. In which case, Lyndon will give you a new tune just for shipping.

But that stuff I smoked at the Holiday Inn Express last night *might* have been crack...And I could be way off base here.

Not sure...It was white...In a pipe....Is that bad?

I have had my truck scanned even whaen it was not in for engine related problems. I just use only a HyperTech tune on mine and I uninstall it is it goes to dealer for anything and re-install it when I get it back.

I'd say get the engine broken in for 500 miles, get all the "new vehicle" bugs all taken care of if there are any, then get the tune.

Why wait any longer? Wester's tuning will make the engine more efficient and make the tranny shift better with less slip. He also will flash your PCM with EVERY GM update available before he loads your custom tune. As has been said, the dealer cannot see that the PCM has a custom tune, it is invisable to them, they see only that everything is OK and that all updates have been done.

I seriously question that because everything digital leaves a signature of it own for its data and checksum and I find it hard to believe that it cannot be detected and overwritten too. These tunes can effect emmsions and they could get fined if they cannot find vehical that has non compliant firmware in it. I may be wrong but I still feel it best to not have it in SUV when it is in the shop for any reason.

magnuson moss act covers alot of the details related to aftermarket parts and modifications and their relation to factory warranties. That doesn't mean that you won't be in for a fight if the authorized repairman does deny warranty claims.

The dealers Tech2 scanner checks for errors or corrupted programming. and tells them what updates have been done. They do not have the capability to look at the programming, but only see that it is working correctly. Many have brought their Wester's tuned trucks to the dealers and the dealer has nor seen anything but stock. I myself brought mine to my local GMC dealer, and told my friend that does all the PCM work that I had a tune. I asked him to try to find it. He tried every trick he knew, but saw only stock tuning with all the updates. He now has a Wester's tune in his personal truck too!

Then westers will retune it for you for shipping cost or in this guy's case he may decide to just drive back and have it reflashed.

Thx guys for the replies

My buddy may be bringing his truck and his boat as well. He spoke to Lyndon who said he may be able to free up 30-40 hp out of his 4.3 boat motor.

Figure since we live so close to his shop, that we might as well take 3 vehicles to get tuned and get it all done in one day.
