New Intermidiate Steering Shaft

Recommended Posts

Taking the '01 into the dealer tomorrow to get the recall done on the tailgate cables and thought I would get the annoying thunk in my steering wheel taken care of. I am going to ask for the re-designed shaft instead of just the re-grease. The truck has 42,700 miles on it. Anyone with the new shaft? Would I be better off with just a re-greasing? Will let everyone know how it goes tomorrow. Taking it in first thing in the morning so hopefully I'll have it back by late afternoon.

I've been contemplating the new shaft too since my warranty will expire w/in 2k miles. From what I've heard so far, it seems that the new shafts eventually develop the clunk too :chevy:

Get the updated shaft. If the dealer has some available.

I know the updated shafts can be hard to come by at some dealerships.

Greasing is just a patch job, it's good to hold you over till you can get a new steering shaft.

Other than the clunk, is there an issue with the clunk that will lead to a breakdown or performance problem? Or is it just a noise....?

I've heard people on hear say the new ones "clunk" too after time, they just make it where ou go longer between greasings. Use the search button and you can find what you want to know.
