Trucks you have owned

Recommended Posts

Here is my list of GM trucks owned, complete with the pro's and con's of each.

1971 Chevy C-20: 3/4 ton, two wheel drive "custom" with three-on-the-tree, a 250 6cyl and power brakes. Pro's: my first vehicle! Pretty much a beater that I didn't have to worry to much about. Learned a lot about working on trucks. Hauled a boat load of stuff in this beauty. Con's: lack of power from the 6 cyl, could only muster about 60 MPH on a good day.

1982 Chevy K-20: 1/2 ton 4x4 with 305v8 and four speed manual, PS, PB with "custom deluxe" interior (no AC). Pro's: first four wheel drive, tranny much better than the three-on-tree, 3.08 gears made her roar on the highway. Still a beater, so didn't have to worry about scratches. Con's: 3.08 ratio made her a dog down low. No AC. Auto hubs had to be replaced with manual lockers. Uncomfortable seat (mainly due to previous owner).

1987 GMC K-20 HD: Purchased this HD 4x4 from my Dad. Was the mid level "sierra" with AC, PS, PB, manual windows and no cruise. 350v8 with 4 speed manual. Pro's: HD 4x4 could haul just about anything I could get in the bed. Loved the stiff ride. AC was great (first truck with AC!) First year with EFI. Solid truck that ran well. Con's: Not many. Still wish I had this truck. Steering was a little loose. Not very family friendly...baby seat didn't fit well between wife and I (which lead to...)

1999 Silverado 1500 Ext Cab: Z-71 package with buckets, LS package, 5.3 engine. Pro's: Long list here...power pretty much everything, extended cab, comfy ride, powerful & fast, got great MPG, CD player, etc., etc. Con's: Why only three doors?

2001 Silverado 1500 Ext Cab: Again, Z-71 package and pretty much everything from the 1999...except this one had FOUR doors and the temp guage in the mirror. Pro's: Just like the 99, only better! Con's: For some reason got worse MPG than the 99(?).

2004 Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab: 4x4/8.1/Allison, LT package, DVD, On-star, XM, Leather, etc. This is pretty much my dream truck. The 245's had to go. Need bigger fuel cell.

Here is my list, not all of them are pickup trucks but "trucks" nonetheless

Present:

1979 Dodge Power wagon: Pros--it still runs and drives good, has a winch, lift, big rubber, a 440, and a dump bed, ice cold AC..... Cons--its old, smells, has some rust on the floor, gets 9 mpg, looks like a turd

2002 Chevrolet Silverado: Pros--drives nice and sporty, seems higher and much better on hunting roads than the new one, pretty much everything about it.....Cons--regular cab space issues and a much stiffer ride than the extended cab

2004 Chevrolet Silverado: Pros--super smooth everything, comfy seats with all the lumbar and heat, Bose and automatic climate control, and I like the DIC stuff

Cons--more little buzzes and rattles than I like, and I would love a 5 speed auto

Previous:

1996 Land Rover Discovery: Pros--I could fix everything wrong with it myself, 5sp manual and extreme easiness of modifications (lift, winch, tires, racks)....Cons--I hate to fix things all the time

1999 Mitsubishi Montero (fullsize Monty): Pros--Nice size and comfort.....Cons--total lemon, all kinds of stuff always breaking

2001 Land Rover Discovery Series 2: Pros--I just love the character of these things......Cons--typical Land Rover quality issues

2004 Nissan Titan: Pros--engine and tranny were incredible, nice looks and could tow great, everyone liked it, especially the thieves that stole it.....Cons--the interior lacked durability, everything knicked and scratched within a month, really cheap feeling seats, brakes rotors warped twice in 3 months, buzzes and rattles, AC leaked condensation leaked onto floor even after it was *fixed* twice, power windows did not like to roll up on occasion....

1961 Ford F100 (2x4) - Good old truck, tough, just beat the crap out of it. 3 speed on the floor was a little sloppy.

1986 Ford Ranger Extended Cab (2x4) - Ok Truck, Just hated the 4 cyl.

1993 Ford F150 Flarside (2x4) - Absolutely hated this truck, Straight 6 was awful, Bench seat was like sitting on a steel beam and the clutch pedal took two grown men to push in. Needless to say only had the truck eleven months.

1997 GMC Z71 Extended cab (4x4)- First GM truck and loved almost everything about, the only problems I had was from lug nuts would always lock up and had to break them to get them off, Went through about 15 studs and nuts over the 6 years I had the truck.

2003 GMC 2500HD Crew Cab (4x4) (Current Truck)- I love this truck, it does eveything that I can throw at it and it keeps going. The only thing that I would like to have had on it would be the steering wheel controls, Diesel and alison tranny.

That's all of the trucks that I have owned, but there was many other cars.

1971 CUTLAS - 350 Rocket

1993 Cavalier Z24

1969 Buick GS400 - Ram Air Hood

1995 Camaro Z28 - 6 Speed (Excelent Car)

1967 Malibu Convertible (4 1/2 year rebuild) (My Favorite Car) Sold Last Year

1965 Chevy with inline 6. Had over 200k on the clock. Pros: Was a classic.

Cons: A rustbucket. Nicknamed the Mosquito Killer because of all the oil it burned. Not much power and since it was a column shift three speed, the linkage would jam if not shifted correctly.

1989 Mazda B2200. Pros: Great gas mileage. Cons: Anemic power and way too small for anything practical

1988 S-10. Pros: Great gas mileage from 4-banger. Great candidate for V-8 swap. Cons: Terrible gas mileage from the 383 stroker. Pros: Killer smoke clouds!

2000 Silverado Reg Cab Fleetside. Pros: Light Pewter Metallic paint hardly showed dirt. 4.6l V-6 was admirable on gas and power. Towed a 4500lb. 29 ft. travel trailer. Struggled a bit, but made the trip. Cons: Uncanny ability of security system to shut down the fuel delivery system at inopportune moments. Not enough room for family. Darned steering thump!

2003 Silverado Ext Cab Fleetside. Pros: Good enough power from 4.8l V-8 for my personal needs. Classic interior accomodations for self and family. Floats down the highway effortlessly. Cons: Not so great mileage. Front end copied from Avalanche. Drive by wire throttle not my cup of tea even after 2 years. More steering thump, but fixed under warranty.

1979-K5 Blazer- Only had it for 3 months. A drunk driver ran a stop sign and totaled it.

1987-K5 Blazer(Coverted to a pickup) - 300hp 350 engine, 8" full spring skyjacker lift, 35x16x15 swamper boggers, 4.88 gears. I drove it hard for 6 years (156kmiles) on the stock tranny and transfer case(And they say 700r4 are weak). I finally got rid of it when I cracked the frame the third time.

fc275fa9.jpg

1996-GMC Sonoma Highrider- A strong little reliable truck. I just wish it had a little more power and 4.10s from the factory. It's still running strong at 140K miles and no major parts failures. My dad uses it for bad weather and trips to home depot.

fc5ad457.jpg

2003-Silverado-5.3l and 4.10s. I love this truck. I just wish I could have got it with an LQ9 and leather

Well I have to list my dad’s trucks here......

1980 Plymouth Arrow - Pros -- Price, compact size...this was before the S10, my grandfather also got an 80 Arrow and it is still on the road today.

1982 S10 - Pros-- 5 speed, nice truck, Cons -- too small for a growing family

1988 C1500 - Pros -- 350, excab, Cons -- I have no clue why he got a 2wd.

1993 K1500 - Pros -- 350, excab, 4x4, Loved this truck... Still on the road today with its 3rd owner, Cons -- The 1500 wasnt enough for our towing needs

1996 K2500 - Pros -- 350, excab, 4x4, Cargo capacity, Cons -- waited 6 months to take delivery, the whole interior rattled, fuel pump went out at 5K, needed a 3rd door

2000 S10 - Pros -- ZR2, excab, the BFGs, Cons -- underpowered, low mpg

traded it in for the Bravada

2001 2500 HD - Pros -- 6.0 will pull anything, great interior, clean exterior body lines, Cons -- Piston Slap noise, the transfer case blew out at 17K, all factory shocks were trash before 30K

If everything goes right, I am going to get the HD off of my dad next year as he gets a new truck.

1, 1978 T-bird bought it to piss off my mom had it for 3 weeks and blew the engine

2,1980 custom delux 1/2 ton standard cab short bed, great truck v6, 3 speed on the column and my 1st stick shift. After several months of it constantly needing repairs to due lack of maintenace thur the years it was traded in

3,1991 Isuzu Pickup stock,1st new pick up, nice little truck did 110mph. I kept it for five or six years sold it to a relative because I wanted to get another 1/2ton

4,1992 GMC 4x4 work truck v6 stick shift. This was an awesome truck that was very capable offroad but I consistently would push it above what it was able to do offroad, as a side note do not take off the sway bar and run 32" M/T tires. After several months like this I bent the frame went thru 3 cv joints and the 4wd attenuator went out. Since I had just moved to Dallas to start a new job I traded it in

5,1999 GMC 1/2 ton step side with a v6, stick shift. This was my 1st step side and the truck drove pretty nice. but did not like that you could not turn the lights off with teh engine running while the parking brake was released.

6, I bought a 1978 Chevy K20 4x4 as a project truck but sold it 2 months later afetr realizing having a project truck and living in an apartment do not go together.

7,When the lease on the stepside came up and traded it in on my current ride. An 02 GMC ext cab, my 1st v8,1st ext cab and 1st truck that was not a base model. 90,055 miles later and after numerious compliments about the truck  It will be staying around for another 100,000 miles.

Ok, here's the list:

1997 Ford F-150 XCab 4x4 Lariat- great looks, very dependable but underpowered (4.6L V8)

1998 Ford F-150 XCab 4x4 Lariat-See notes above, plus this one got incredibly bad fuel mileage for such a small V8

2001 Chevy Z-71 XCab LT-awesome ride, loved the interior and the transmission/engine combo (5.3L auto) this is probably the best truck I have owned up until my current '05 Chevy

2003 Ford F-250 XCab 4x4-not a smooth riding truck by any means, but once the 7.3L diesel was chipped, this thing would haul, and it got an avg of 18mpg around town!!!!

2004 Ford F-250 Crew Cab Lariat 4x4-one of my favorite trucks, the 6.0L engine is a good one and so is the 5sp auto, ride was much better than the XCab diesel (probably due to the added weight of the Crew Cab)

2004 Ford F-150 XCab FX4-worst truck I've ever owned, the engine sucks, the tranny is always shifting, had numerous paint/body/interior noise issues with this truck from day one

2004 Ford F-250 Crew Cab Lariat 4x4-the V10 has tons of power, but as expected, terrible gas mileage and very plain interior compared to GM trucks

2005 Chevy Z-71 XCab LT-love it so far, not one complaint really, other than my transfer case being replaced at 500 miles

So there it is-needless to say, I've owned more of the Ford$ than anything, and I really can't complain about them too much. But, The 2 Chevys I've had were/are awesome! The ride on road in the GM trucks is MUCH better than a Ford, no questions asked, and the GM transmissions (at least in the 1/2 ton trucks) are a huge improvement over the Ford. All things considered, I don't see myself owning another Ford any time soon. Hopefully GM will not do their trucks a disservcie when they change the bodystyle for '07.

1970 C-10 In line 6, 3 in the tree, (140,000 miles) couldn't kill it, great party truck in high school.

1977 GMC Scottsdale. 350 CI. Auto. (100,000) passed every thing but gas stations.

1983 Ford Ranger. V6 5 speed. (12,000 miles) Warrenty expiered and dumped it fast! Not in sound mind at the time of purchase (left handed smokes)

1987 Dodge Ram Charger Prospecter. 360 Ci auto 4X4.. 6" lift, 35" mudders,(40,000 miles)...

Nice truck..

1989 Toyota Ext cab 2 wd. 22RE 4 cyl. 5 speed. This pick up is still in the family and has 430,000 miles on it. 1 alternator, 1 clutch, 1 water pump, 2 steel boxes, 1 fibre glass box. 2 sets of doors, 2 front fenders. February this truck went from Toronto to Florida and back with out an incident. 3000 miles..

1992 GMC Reg cab, 305 CI auto dropped.. Nice truck..( speedo stuck at 50,000 miles for 3 years) reg cab to small for family..

1993 S-10 Jimmy 4X4. 4.3 Auto, loaded. Wifes "lil" truck. Only (60,000 miles). She won't let me get rid of it!

1995 GMC K-2500 4X4, 6.5 TDI. 3" lift, 305/75/16 Geolander II, ( 120,000 miles) By far the nicest truck I ever owned or drove at this point. This truck only broke down on pay days and income tax returns. GM engineers must have been smokin the left handed smokes when they designed the 6.5 Turbo diesel.

2001 Silverado 1500 2WD. ECSB, LS. 5.3, (35,000 Miles) Auto, I love every thing about this truck except for the piston slap when it's cold.

As you can see, I have only swayed a few times away from GM products, 3 times when it comes to trucks. All my cars have been GM except for a 1969 Dart Swinger 340 Ci that I bought at the age of 16. My kid brother has owned the swinger fo the last 10 years, I had it since 1977.

I have to admit after owning the 6.5 TDI, I was looking at Dodge trucks before I bought the 2001 Silverado.

The only previous truck I owned was a 1991 full size (reg cab) chevy cheyenne W/T.

Very good truck 2wd, easy to fix, had vinyl interior, descent mpg (4.3l V6).

The only thing I wish it had was an ext. cab and it suffered the 1991 flaking paint problem

1975 F100 Ford truck 5.0 vb. was a family vehicle, got it with around 100K, drove it for 2 weeks to school, and got a call in my study hall class, that the fire department was called, still not sure what happend but one of the fuel line/filter burst and engine was hot enough that it caught on fire. Spend 2 yrs in hs with that truck and 3 yrs in college with it.

1997 Ford Explorer- 5.0 V8 4WD - 3 inch body lift and TT/shackles about 5 inches with both. Went everywhere with that(rain/snow/mud). Very easy to fix, only 2 major problems in the 170K+ miles with it, O2 sensor(PITA to replace) and the DEFP(???) sensor. Only reason i got rid of it was i needed a truck and fast.

so i got this....

1999 GMC Sierra sl ex cab truck. Very nice looking truck, and does what i need it for, yet had many many problems with it, but it's paid off so i'll deal with that for a while now. but besides that i love my truck.

1970 Chev 4x2. Reg cab, long bed,350,AT - I had this truck for about a week. A friend gave it to me because it didn't run. I replaced a head with one I had in my garage, and sold it back to him for $500.

1976 Chev 4x4 Scottsdale. Reg cab short bed,350,4 spd manual. - My dad bought it new in '76,and gave it to me in about 1995. We trashed this truck like no other and it kept coming back for more. When I finally dumped it it had over 300K,and still ran OK. The ignition switch was so worn out I could start it without a key.

1986 K-5 4x4 Blazer Silverado. 350,AT - Another one we beat the hell out of and it ran great, but was hard on transmissions. I traded it in when the tranny puked a third time at about 150K.

1989 Nissan P/U 4x2. Reg cab short bed. 2.4 liter 4cyl,5spd manual. I drove this one about 100K and sold it in 1998.

1998 Ford Ranger 4x4 X-cab short bed. 4.0 liter,5spd manual. - I bought it new in '98 and put 30K on it before I traded it in 2000. Was actually a decent truck for a Ford. I did have to have the transfer case replaced under warranty.

1998 Chev 4x4 Z-71. X-cab short bed. 350,AT - Bought used in 2000. I drove it about 50K and traded it in 2002. Probably my favorite truck,I'd still have it,but pulling my trailer was also pulling its guts out. I got rid of it before it died a slow death.

1999 Chev S-10 Blazer 4x4. 4.3 liter,AT. - Bought used in 1999. I have almost 100K on it now.

2001 2500HD X-cab short bed 4x4. 8.1 liter,Allison. - I bought it used in 2002. Pulls our trailer a whole lot better than my Z-71,and actually is the most capable 4x4 I've owned. The only downside is its size. Ability wise it will go almost anywhere it will fit. Its like a big red tank.
