- 86 - Ford Bronco II

4 speed plus overdrive manual 4x4.

2 inch skyjacker lift and multicolored body panels when I got done with it - opps.

Pros- Good First car, loved the manual, tracked good off road and had good visibility in the drivers seat.

Cons- under powered!!! - cold, always breaking too. I had to have a large screwdriver to open the back gate - broken latch.

1988 GMC 1500 Reg Cab Short Bed 4x4 -

small body lift from previous owner - 350 throttle body and a flowmaster muffler.

Pros - good second truck in a pinch when the previous truck (Bronco caught on fire in College Parking lot. Rode good and heated up quickly (reg. cab). I also loved the sliding rear window. Put 40.000 miles on it and sold it for more than I bought it for :P

Cons - vacuum leak in the engine that I never could find.

2003 GMC 2500HD EX Cab Short bed 4x4 (LT package) 6.0 V8

cranked torsion bars and installed 285's - not much else.

Pros - first taste of nice trucks! loved it.

Cons - slightly underpowered and it sucked gas. Cramped in extended cab.

2005 2500HD Chevy CrewCab Short Bed Duramax/Allison 4x4

Cognito Leveling kit with new upper control arms-

295 70 17 Nitto Terra Grapplers

MBRP Cool Duels Exhaust with no cat

2" rear block

EFI Live custom tune :)

Stg 4 Suncoast Allison Tranny UpGrade

Pros - Power Power Power and torque - Great ride and how I loved the sound of a turbo winding up in the morning - my favorite by far.

Cons - I traded it in - shouldn't have but hindsight is 50-50. Cost of diesel was higher too but oh well.

Current Truck 2008 GMC 1500 CC SB 4x4 with 5.3 and 4speed auto

Just purchased some Bilstein Leveling shocks/kit not here yet though

Putting on 285 70 17's Toyos with in the week.

Pros - Comfortable, good ride and great interior. Looks good too (just sits too low)

Cons - Lack of power (or low end torque to be more precise but hey I am spoiled too)

Small Bed - My tool box wouldn't even fit into it.

Milage isn't what I was expecting either - I traded in for better milage and for cheaper car but the mileage a is a little worse

It is the second best truck I've had though and besides the ride height and powertrain everything else is better :flag:

2001 2 door blazer 4x4, very nice, fully loaded. Wife hated it, lack of power from the 4.3, to damn small.

2006 Silverado, it does the job, rides nice, handles everything we have tried, drives great in the snow, pulls the trailers, not bad on gas either!

This thread's been around so long I can't remember if I replied or not, so here goes:'

1. 1971 F250 4x4. Still my favourite truck. Had a 390 4bbl with a cam, NP435, and immense power. Pass anything but a gas station. And handled like it was on rails, because it was so stiff. Armstrong steering. Like driving a tractor. Became very rusty.

2. 1967 Mercury 150. Body in mint condition. Really cool truck. Currently the body is being restored for placing on the frame of #1 for a 1967 mercury 250 4x4. Building a 428 for it. Back when Fords were good.

3. 1971/67 2wd. Put the rusty F250 body on the 67 Merc frame and put the 390 in it. Could not keep tires on the back. Laid patches a block long. Had Dana 44 which made things real fun. And the Borg Warner "4" speed (3 plus lo). What was left of the F250 body was indestructible. Back then body metal was as thick as armor plate. I built a couple of houses and restored a heritage building with this truck. You could not hurt this truck even when you dropped appliances into it from a 2nd storey window. This thing was TOUGH.

4. 93 GMC 1500 regular cab z71. Comfortable. Put 3" rancho lift in it and 33's. Called it the "wide brute" after the tires. Had 350 with headers and K&N and Edelbrock exhaust. Nice truck. Blew tranny at 180,000 km. Put new one in and drove trouble free another 50k. Then plastic rad cracked, intake gasket went (that's probably where the mysterious vacuum leak was in that guy's 98) and I sold it.

5. 05 GMC 1500 SLT. My current truck. Love it. Nice interior but the nnbs is way nicer. Great stereo. Sunroof. Wester's, K&N, Corsa Sport, 5" lift, Bilstein 5100s, Nitto TG 305's, American Racing Victors, four KC Rally 800 lites, 2 driving 2 spot. Built in Sirius (installed myself). Hate the smudge the wipers leave in front of your eyes. Hate the way the snow falls in off the roof when you open the door. Wish the back seats were leather and the interior was less plasticky. Miss the full length box. Love the extended cab doors opening both ways. Wish the doors wud open as far as the nnbs. Stupid GM flasher doesn't work with LED's. Driveshaft rumble at 85 mph at WOT. Onstar is stupid - getting a BlueStar.

1987 Ford Bronco II XLT, 4x4, Auto, 2.8L V6

Pros: Good little run about, cheap, easy on gas, decent off road ability, reliable

Cons: Underpowered, a few minor problems, inadequate cooling system for hot climates

1996 Ford Explorer XLT, 2wd, Auto, 4.0L pushrod V6

Pros: Comfortable ride, plenty of room in the back when you laid the seats down

Cons: Marginal gas mileage, trannie problems at 14k miles, alignment problems early on as well.

1996 Chevy K1500 Silverado EC, SWB, Z71, Vortec 350

Pros: First real truck, loved the sound of true duals with cherry bombs, chick magnet, awesome power, very reliable and cheap to repair.

Cons: Not many unless you judge by today's standards (horrid gas mileage, no 3rd door, not ridiculously overloaded with electronic b.s., etc.)

2001 Silverado 1500 LS EC SWB Z71 5.3L

Pros: Somewhat reliable, fast, comfortable

Cons: Not nearly as much torque as the '96, transmission went out at 8k and 10k miles, mother minor electrical gremlins, marginal gas mileage.

2001 Silverado 2500HD LS EC SWB Dmax/Allison

Pros: My first diesel, comfortable, decent power from the stock settings, awesome power when I straight piped and Juiced it, great towing characteristics

Cons: It was an early '01 truck and had the fuel system problems - needed new injectors, new fuel lines, and a new HP fuel pump at 79k miles.

2003 Mustang GT, 4.6L, 5-speed

Pros: Very fun car to drive, great fuel mileage, loved the sound with the Flowmasters, decent power that could let me run 140 up the interstate

Cons: Too much fun to drive...knew I had to get rid of it before it landed me in the morgue or the jail house.

2000 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4, SLE, Cummins, NV4500

Pros: Unbeatable torque and fuel economy, fairly reliable, the sound of the HX35 spooling was magical especially when coupled with the straight piped Cummins, very comfortable and towed like a dream

Cons: The truck was a former oil field hot shot truck so I had to put a clutch in it, had to replace the transfer pump but didn't catch it in time so the VP44 went out and cost me $2100 in towing bills and repairs. Wish I still had it though.

2000 Ford F150 Lariat 5.4L 4x4

Pros: Great visibility from the driver's seat, very good torque.

Cons: Horrid gas mileage and it wasn't a diesel so I sold it.

2001 Ford F250 XLT EC SWB 2wd Powerstroke/6-speed

Pros: Excellent blend of towing ability and fun to drive especially when I started modding it, got great mileage and was very reliable.

Cons: The ZF 6-speed is an expensive trannie to rebuild. Other than needing a clutch and trannie rebuild it was a great truck and I kick myself every week for getting rid of it.

2003 Silverado 1500 LS (see Wife's Truck in Sig)

Pros: Fairly reliable, great truck for the wife, kid, dog, and other crapola, I can work on it myself

Cons: The usual stuff....non-serviceable front hubs, shoddy intake manifold design, marginal gas mileage, GM cutting corners to screw the consumer by offering less and charging more.

1993 Dodge D350 (see My Truck in sig)

Pros: Extremely reliable, unbeatable gas mileage, insane ability to blow massive amounts of smoke on the punks at the stop lights, can tow a house, the sound of the straight piped Cummins, parts are dirt cheap and can be replaced with basic hand tools, when you open the hood all you see is an engine and associated parts and not 6 miles of wires and hoses running all over the place, mods are free or very inexpensive. This is hands down the most reliable and best value truck I've ever owned. I paid $6k for it 2 1/2 years ago and haven't had to do much other than fuel and oil changes.

Cons: The truck has 180k miles on it so it has some minor problems. Dodge's factory paint was gone so it got a new paint job and some of the normal wear items are starting to need replacing.

1964 IHC, 345 V8 - Couldn't wear out the engine. Doors and fenders fell off!

1966 Chevy 3/4T 2WD 283 V8 - Probably one of the best trucks ever owned.

1968 Chevy 1/2T 2WD V8 - Positively the worst truck ever owned.

1974 Chevy 1/2T 4WD 350 V8 - With the 1966 one of the best.

1978 Ford Ranger 2WD 360 V8 - When the Ranger was still a full sized truck. Excellent ride. Even back then, when gas was less than 50 cents/gallon, thought it was a gas hog.

1983 Chevy S10 2WD V6 - Transportation only.

Took a break from truck for a while...

2004 Chevy ECSB C1500 4.8L - Ran this rascal 165,000 miles without spending a dime on it. Excellent truck!!!

2008 Chevy ECSB K1500 5.3L - Simply, the most beautiful truck I've ever owned. Much too nice for an old fart like me! What a joy to own. She started, easily, in the -23F temp this morning. Promised her a good wash, wax, and whatever she wanted when the weather turns nice again. She's awesome!!!!

  • 2 weeks later...
Here is my list of GM trucks owned, complete with the pro's and con's of each.

1971 Chevy C-20: 3/4 ton, two wheel drive "custom" with three-on-the-tree, a 250 6cyl and power brakes. Pro's: my first vehicle! Pretty much a beater that I didn't have to worry to much about. Learned a lot about working on trucks. Hauled a boat load of stuff in this beauty. Con's: lack of power from the 6 cyl, could only muster about 60 MPH on a good day.

1982 Chevy K-20: 1/2 ton 4x4 with 305v8 and four speed manual, PS, PB with "custom deluxe" interior (no AC). Pro's: first four wheel drive, tranny much better than the three-on-tree, 3.08 gears made her roar on the highway. Still a beater, so didn't have to worry about scratches. Con's: 3.08 ratio made her a dog down low. No AC. Auto hubs had to be replaced with manual lockers. Uncomfortable seat (mainly due to previous owner).

1987 GMC K-20 HD: Purchased this HD 4x4 from my Dad. Was the mid level "sierra" with AC, PS, PB, manual windows and no cruise. 350v8 with 4 speed manual. Pro's: HD 4x4 could haul just about anything I could get in the bed. Loved the stiff ride. AC was great (first truck with AC!) First year with EFI. Solid truck that ran well. Con's: Not many. Still wish I had this truck. Steering was a little loose. Not very family friendly...baby seat didn't fit well between wife and I (which lead to...)

1999 Silverado 1500 Ext Cab: Z-71 package with buckets, LS package, 5.3 engine. Pro's: Long list here...power pretty much everything, extended cab, comfy ride, powerful & fast, got great MPG, CD player, etc., etc. Con's: Why only three doors?

2001 Silverado 1500 Ext Cab: Again, Z-71 package and pretty much everything from the 1999...except this one had FOUR doors and the temp guage in the mirror. Pro's: Just like the 99, only better! Con's: For some reason got worse MPG than the 99(?).

2004 Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab: 4x4/8.1/Allison, LT package, DVD, On-star, XM, Leather, etc. This is pretty much my dream truck. The 245's had to go. Need bigger fuel cell.

1970 Custom Camper 20. 2wd longbed truck. 350 sbc, turbo 350, rockwell/eaton 5.13 geared rear end. LT245/75-16 tires. Manual steering, manual 4 wheel drum brakes.

1974 Cheyenne Super 20. 2wd longbed crew cab. 454, turbo 400 and 4.56 gears. 9.5x16.5 tires.

1977 Custom Camper 30. 2wd crew cab dually. Tall deck truck 427, SM 465 and 4.10 gears. 8.75x16.5 tires.

1981 Sierra 3500. Reg cab, long bed 4wd. LT235/85-16 tires, 350 sbc, turbo 400, np 205 and 4.10 geared front dana 60 and rear ff 14 bolt.

1985 Custom Deluxe 30. Reg cab, large flat bed 4wd dually. 350 sbc, turbo 400, np 205, 4.10 geared dana 60 front and narrow ff 14 bolt. LT235/85R16 tires.

1986 Custom Deluxe 30. Crew cab, long bed 4wd dually. 350 sbc, sm 465, np 205, 4.56 geared front dana 60 and rear dana 70. LT235/85R16 Tires.

1987 Custom Deluxe 20. Crew cab, long bed 2wd. 350 tbi, turbo 400 and 4.10 geared ff 14 bolt. LT265/75R16 tires.

1989 Silverado V3500. Crew cab, long bed 4wd dually. 454 tbi, turbo 400, np 205, 4.56 geared front dana 60 and rear dana 70. LT235/85R16 tires.

1989 Sierra SLE R3500. Crew cab, long bed 2wd dually. Was 454 tbi, now 350 tbi, will be soon a vortec 454. Turbo 400, will be a 4l80e soon. 3.73 geared dana 70. hybrid bucket/captains chair front seats, center armrest/console that flips up for another seat with an additional storage compartment after you flip the seat cushion up, custom headliner, custom cb radio with pod above the rearview mirror, fully loaded with cruise, pw, pdl, ac etc.... I wont even get into the cars, jeeps, etc...I have had many, and I am not that old :sigh:

I am a mechanic, and have always taken the best care of my vehicles, so no real complaints.
