Leaking seal on rear diff

Recommended Posts

The seal on my rear diff is beginning to leak (where the pinion shaft enters the housing). I have a very long trip to go in in two weeks and hope to have this fixed before that. Has anyone else had the same problem? Is this an easy fix? I think I can unbolt the driveshaft and the pinion yoke and replace the seal, but is there anything else involved?

Thanks!

YES, you will have to re-set the pre-load of the pinion bearing. May I suggest getting a repair manual for the procedure and specifications, and to make sure you are comfortable with the procedure. Premature wear of the bearing and/or the gear set can result if proper torque is not applied.
