Missed Shifts

My girlfriend has a '94 Silverado C1500, and the tranny is acting kinda wierd.

What it's doing is as she starts to climb a grade at highway speed, it will downshift to 3rd for a split second before trying to downshift to 2nd!! (it's either that or it's slipping massively)  At any rate, it causes her rpms to skyrocket to almost 5000 rpms (her redline is at 4K)

This is a random occourance, and it will do it on occasion even under hard acceleration on flat ground.

Has anyone had problems like this before?  If so, what was the culprit and how did you go about getting it fixed? I'm going to check the fluid level tomorrow after she gets off work and see if it's low and maybe that's what's causing it.

FYI, I'm not sure if it's a 4L60E or a 4L80E, but the first gear doesn't seem to be the really short 3.06 in the 4L60.

Thanks for any help!

With the 1/2 ton, it is the 4L60E.

Check fluid levels, it may need fluid/filter/flush. There could be a lot of dirt/debris in it that is slowing fluid flow or creating a pressure problem.

Thanks, Friz!

I checked the fluid this afternoon and the level was within spec, but it looked rather dirty - almost brown in color, and very little red.  I told her she needs to have the fluid and filter changed ASAP.  It still may be under warranty with the dealer, and that may be covered, but I'm not sure.
