looking for advice on buying K3500HD

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am a car guy who may be buying a truck in the next two years as a third vehicle. I don't want to mess around, so I was thinking of the Chevy/GMC K3500HD. Not sure yet on bed or cab style, but definitely 4x4 SRW.

I like the looks of the Duramax 6600/Allison AT6 combination on paper. What can I expect for mi/gal on highway, empty?

Also, are all these bugs gone that I hear about every once in a while from the older models- bad inhjectors, clogged fuel system, etc.?

It seems to come out around $40k MSRP- are these Duramax trucks obtainabl with the deals as other GM products? Like GM card, employee pricing, and incentives?

Lastly, I hope to pull the trigger once the GMT-900 platform arrives.

Thanks,

J

PS- When I did used to have a truck, I was a Ford guy. I think I have switched over though. I'm not liking what I hear about the 6000 PowerStroke.

You should know that:

The K3500SRW that I bought in 1995 had a 9200 GVWR.

The equivalent truck today is the K2500HD. Same 9200 GVWR.

The current K3500SRW has fewer configurations available, so before you settle on the K3500, make sure you're not really just wanting a K2500HD.

OK I have just figured out the dif between a 2500 and a 2500HD. who knows the dif between the srw 3500 and the srw3500HD. (I never knew a 3500 HD existed).

I think the 3500 has a gvw of 9800 how much more can you go with srw?

A SRW 3500HD doesn't exist that I'm aware of.  Unless I'm missing something, the options are:

2500

2500 HD

3500 SRW

3500 Dually

3500 HD Dually (I'm not sure they even make these anymore.  I think they now just go straight tot the 4500 series)

im with him

they dont make a 3500hd anything as far as i know and to be honest im yet to see a 3500 srw in the nbs anybody???

im sure u can find a used an i mean used 3500hd around but those trucks lived hard lives

I didn't think they existed. I have seen the 3500 srw NBS in fact I almost bought one, last year. They are the 2500HD with 265 tires and an 11.5 FF rearend. Got my present HD instead didn't need the extra gvw anyway.

The only thing that I really did like about the OBS 3500hds was that the front end was a solid front axle (granted it was a dead axle). It would make a good platform for a 4x4 conversion. Just install a tranfer case, front driveshaft, and a live axle.

What would you be using the truck for... getting a 3500 4x4 may be over kill... heck a 2500hd might even be depending on what you plan on doing with it. Do you plan on heavy towing??? More info on what your planned usage will be help full in giving advice.

As of the 2005 model year GM made a 3500HD. I drive one at work. Still has old body style, but new engines. It has 19.5" wheels and a much heavier suspension & rear diff. I drive a bucket truck that weighs about 12000 lbs loaded with all my stuff.

Yes, but the 3500hd isn't a single rear wheel. Any idea on what the GWVR is on the current 3500HD, and which engines are offered? I can't find anything about it on Chevrolet's or GM's website. . .

I always loved the looks/interior of the OBS. If its still available (and even better with the new engines), that might be my next truck!

The 2500HD and 3500 SRW are virtually identical trucks.

The only difference between the two is the 3500 SRW gets the overload spring on the rear axle and 265/75 tires to get the increased GVW from 9200 (2500HD) to 9900 (3500 SRW).

Of course there are a few subtle trim options that are different between the two but mechanically they are the same truck. Some things are standard on one and optional on the other.
