265s to 285s

Recommended Posts

Took the plunge and got new tires yesterday. I went ahead and got Cooper Discoverer ATR 285 75 16. I had the same, well not the same they redesigned them to keep the middle from wearing down to fast and changed the name from AT to ATR, they lasted me three years on my last truck. They ride great, have good wet traction, and look awesome.

I know they are only an inch taller, but it makes a huge difference in looks as well as height. I am actually using my nerf bars now????????? With the 265s I could slide in and out on the seat, the 285s make that a little harder.

I have not had a chance to get them in the mud yet, but I know the AT performed very well.

Got all four mounted, balamced, lifetime balance and rotation and road hazzard, and alignment for 720.

Bar cranked for about 1.5 inch of lift and no rubbing at all lock to lock.

WHY DOES CHEVY NOT PUT THESE ON AS STOCK TIRES ON THE 4X4s???

Did not get the spedo recalbed but will have it done asap. I have a trip to NJ from Louisiana next week, so I will really get to see how they ride!

Also I watched the alignment and talked to the guy, the only thing off on my truck was the toe, from cranking the bars. It seems to me like the chevys hold their alignment better than any truck I have owned.

Whatever you do, do not get the Cooper AST tires, they are crap! The dealer put them on when I bought the truck (used truck) and that was in September of last year. They looked like they had 80000 miles on them when I got them replaced. The were only 350 for a set though.

These are LT not P like the AST were. They ride a slight bit stiffer, but handling is much better. It doesn't feel like the side wall is folding over when cornering like the Ps did. Tracks better on the interstate too. I know they are wider, but steering effor is no where near what it was with the P tires. It must have something to do with the fact that these have a stiffer sidewall and higher pressure. This is by far the best mod you can do to a stock truck (especially one that you have to eventually do anyway, otherwise I would say a tune!)

Stock 16" Rims

Ok, here is some interesting developments. I went out tonight with my GPS and all the way up to 70 my truck is dead on on the speedo. I didn't get to go any faster so I don't know for sure. Since the shift points, etc are set by the tire size in the computer, I think someone had 285 on the truck before I got it. Ever since I got the tires it seems a whole lot peppier and the shifts happen sooner and firmer, like I am in tow haul but I am not. Also It used to kind of lurch from 1 to 2 in tow haul, not it is much smoother. Does that make any sense????

There is actually not quite an inch difference between the tires so you won't notice any speedo difference. If you place your old tire next to the new tire you will see that there is little difference in height but there is a difference in how much tread you are putting on terra firma (tread width).

Old Tires

Cooper ASTII 265/70R16 Tire height 30.20 Tread Debth 11

New Tires

Cooper Discoverer ATR LT285/75R16 Tire Height 32.93 Tread Debth 17

So basically they are about 2.73 inches taller, and boy can you tell the difference.
