Looking for muffler for 5.3

Just bought a 05 1500 crew cab,5.3,3.73 gears. Want a muffler that sounds better than the stock one. Had a Flowmaster on my last truck 03 2500hd,6.0 and it droned so bad I put the stock one back on. Looking for something that will flow better than stock but not alot louder. It seems like Dodge and Nissan trucks sound so much better. Why cant GM make our trucks sound more like trucks? Would like to leave the rest of the system stock, just cut out and replace the muffler. Any ideas on a good sounding muffler that is not to loud?

Not sure what Flowmaster you had, but maybe try a 70 series? It's a bid quieter then the 40 or 50. I have a 50 single in/dual out on my ECSB Sierra and it sounds great. Also, your tailpipe size and configuration greatly affects how you hear the setup

Where are you in MI? I can recommend a great exhaust professional in the SE Michigan area :D

Not sure what series you had, but I have a 4.8 with the 50 Series Big Block. It has a nice rumble and actually quiets down a little bit on full throttle. At 70, you don't really know it's there.

The reason why some of the others sound better I believe is due to the larger bore, and smaller stroke.

I think the flowmaster I had before was on a 2500 HD w/ the 6.0. It was a 50 series made to fit the 6.0 and 8.1. two 3" inlets and one 3.5" out. Very cool sound just too loud inside. Looking for that old body style sound (chevy trucks 1990-1995). They sounded great from the factory. Thanks for any help. Located around the flint area in michigan.

This might be what you need. FloPro

I've got the 2503 - it's got a little growl but you can't hear it in the cab. I love it - no drone.

I had a 3 chamber flowmaster (i think it may have been the 70 series). It was great, sounded healthy, but not much louder than stock, and no incab resonation.

I just bought the Flowmaster kit w/ dual rear exit and a 70 series big block muffler. The kit is high quality, etc. But it's too quiet for me. I literally can barely tell the difference from stock. My K&N is sounds louder. I may swap just the muffler out for a 50 series.

Thoughts?

Also, I've heard mufflers get louder after a while, is this true?

I'll play devils advocate and throw in the Magnaflow alternative. My 05 Z71 with the 5.3L had barely 3000 km on it when I took off the stock exhaust and had a magnaflow put on. I went with the smallest oval magnaflow you can get, 14 x 4 x 9, with 3 in single in and single out. I love the sound...it's a tad loud, and does drone about around 1900 rpm, but it sounds awesome.

It would be worth checking out a larger magnaflow muffler.

Kody, some mufflers get louder because they are packed with fibreglass or another sound cancelling material that breaks down over time. This won't happen to a flowmaster as it simply has baffles.

I really like my Magnaflow cat-back.

Just ordered a magnaflow muffler online, part no#11259. Its 3" offset in and 3" center out. The magnafow is a bit shorter than the stock so i will have to add a short pipe before the muffler. Should have it installed this weekend.Cost me $74,no shipping cost.

Yes...Magnaflow. My big mistake was that I just let my local muffler shop install whatever, so I'm notreally sure about what I have as far as part no. or anything. They did a great job with the install, and I'm very happy wiht the sound. Next time I'll probably have that same shop install one that I purchased..I really like the stainless steel ones.

Glasspacks and any other muffler that uses any media for sound deadening will eventually become louder after the heat, gasses and vibration and jolting take their toll. With Flowmasters and others that use baffles, porting, etc. to tame and tune sound, since there isn't any media to break down, sound degredation is probably nill to none under normal conditions.

Even though it appears you have purchased your exhaust system figured I would tell you about the one I put on my truck. I have the 2005 Silverado 4x4 with Quadrasteer. I put the Corsa dual side exhaust on the truck along with the Airaid intake system. Made a big difference in performance and gas mileage. The other nice thing about the Corsa is it is a GM approved product and the one that comes with the Joe Gibbs Performance package if you have that done to your truck.

You all have a nice day.
