Sierra Tailgate Cables

I just purchased a 2000 Sierra, and got on the GM website to check for historical info about this truck, and found a recall notice about the cables on the tailgates, it said if you sit on the tailgate the cables could break and you could bust your ass! (just kidding). It did warn not to sit on the tailgate until they replace the cables, or the cable may break, and cause personal injury and damage to the tailgate because it would strike the bumper. I purchased the truck to carry my 4 wheeler, I intended to set the ramp on the lowered tailgate, and drive the 4wheeler onto the tailgate and into the bed. Am I wrong to do this, even with strong cables, should I always remove the tailgate, and set the ramp on the truck bed?

You could take your truck to the dealer and have them find out of the recall work has already been done. If not, they may replace them at no charge, but that depends on the dealer so it's worth checking.

If the cables have white made in China labels on them in the center, those are the replacements, if the cable seems kinked or Lumpy, it's an old one.

I'm on my 3rd set of GM Cables. The current sets available are supposed to be the good ones.

On the current set, one end comes sealed. I used clear silicone to seal up the other end. GM isn't smart enough to seal both I guess...

I drive my snowmobile into the bed with no issues

at work sometimes customers will come in and ask us to drop pallets that sometimes weigh 2-3k lbs in the beds of their trucks and I've loaded plenty of 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks with pallets and we rest part on the tailgate, so far I've had a zero casualty rate on the cables, i know that the whole 2-3 k lbs. isn't all on the tailgate but we rest a huge amount of weight on them, i would just check them regularly and make sure their not wearing...

good luck!!

those cables are plenty strong for an ATV. I have not had any problems, and another guy I ride with has a tool box in the back so his Grizzley's rear tires stay near the edge of the tailgate and he dosnt have any problems.
