Scratchy Noise Driving Me Nuts....

Recommended Posts

Ok, here's the deal. I have a 2001 2500HD equiped with OnStar. I don't currently subscribe to the service. I had my truck into the dealer a week ago for maintance service. I get the truck back and start on a trip to Colorado. I noticed a noise (could also be described as a buzzing) coming from the OnStar microphone which is located on the left edge of the roof right above the driver's left shoulder (I assume that is what the plastic 1" sized object is). I contacted OnStar and they said since I don't subscribe to this service the noise is not related to that system. They indicated it might be related to the radio volumne control. The noise is present whether the radio is on or off. Before I go back to the dealer with a "what did you do to my truck" statement, I wanted to check and see if anyone else on this board may have encounter the same problem. You can't believe how annoying the noise is. Its right by your ear, and sounds like the whole roof is vibrating. One added note, I am positive the noise is coming from the little round plastic disk. Every once and awhile if a jack around with the OnStar buttons and connect/disconnect, push this one and that one, I can get the noise to stop. Once you turn the truck off and restart, the noise is right there again. :nopity:

I had a similar problem in my 03 1500. The little disc with holes in it that's located on the roof above the driver's seat was making a noise that sounded like a little motor was running in it. Took it to the dealer and they knew exactly what I was talking about. The service manager said he had seen it before and the thing in the roof was a sensor for the climate control system. I got it replaced as a warranty item.

Mine has done it occaisionally. I thought it was the OnStar mic also. I fixed mine by turning up the stereo, but my stereo isn't stock anymore so that might not help everyone.

That isn't the OnStar microphone; it's a sensor for your climate control and there's a little fan in there making the noise. (Your OnStar microphone is a black object up by your overhead console area.)

Yet another reason not to get the automatic climate control. It is indeed the aspirator fan for the front cabin temperature sensor that is making the noise (Tahoes & burbs have one in the back as well). It is a very common problem with the auto climate control system.

Besides the Bose audio, this is the next best "creature comfort" option on my truck. My sweetie loves to fiddle with knobs, so she can dink around with her temp all she wants, and the auto control keeps me just at the temp I want.

That's right, you couldn't get manual dual zone in '03, could you?

I'm of the mindset that the less options you get, the less stuff there is to go wrong. :chevy:

Yes you could get dual, manual in 03. I have dual auto and it is the cat's meow. Why does everybody bash on technology. "The less options I have, the less I have to worry about failing". Obviously, but how do you go about perfecting anything. Just drive around like the flinstones. Trucks have come a long ways in just the last 15 years. I know they are more reliable now because a 70's motor was starting to break down after 100K miles or less, now 300K is not unheard of.

Just my "soap box".

You are correct on the manual dual zone availability. I rode in my friends (another Chevy technician) '03 HD today and noticed he has it. My mistake.

I'm not sure about other folks reasons but, the only reason I "bash" on it is because I'm the one stuck fixing the darned things every day at work! No auto climate control, no push button 4x4, no Onstar, XM radio or heated seats on my truck. I've fixed way too many of them to buy it myself.

It isn't that options are a bad idea all together, just that the execution is a bit lacking on some of them. The power folding and auto dimming mirrors are ok, no recurring issues. Secondary steering wheel controls are pretty neat too. Power windows and locks are working pretty good finally, as well as keyless entry. Adjustable pedals are actually working good if you feel a need for them.

That is some of what I have learned about options on our trucks,

Brian
